Bouquet Studios is the unisex Melbourne label inspired by the underground electronic music scene

WORDS BY IZZY WIGHT

“I’d like to think of the label almost as a place, or a time in space rather than an object or something tangible.”

Beau Kelly’s initiation into the fashion world began in 2021, out in the back room of his local Gold Coast skate shop. With no formal fashion training, he was a high school drop-out with a plan to converge his passions for music, clothing and curating events. Beau started by printing T-shirts, releasing his designs under the label Bouquet Studios.

After moving to Melbourne, Beau began rounding out his unisex collection, creating a diffusion line called Bloom by Bouquet (BBB). BBB is comprised of contemporary unisex essentials – like a generously oversized cotton tee emblazoned with a reappropriated version of the Bic logo and a pair of perfectly baggy, double-pleated black pants. Here, Beau reflects on the Bouquet Studios journey so far.

Tell us about you. What’s your fashion background?

I began my journey into the fashion world in 2021 when I started printing tees out the back of our local skate shop (Precinct) on the Gold Coast. Despite being kicked out of high school and not having any formal fashion education or prior experience in the industry, my love for well-made clothing and a strong desire to pursue a career in fashion has driven me forward.

Alongside creating garments, I am also passionate about music and curating events on the Gold Coast and soon enough, in Naarm. I organise an event series called Bloom, which blends electronic music with the vibrant energy of fashion, providing a unique cultural experience for attendees.

I have developed a diffusion line within Bouquet Studios called ‘BBB’ (Bloom by Bouquet). This line offers more accessible pieces at a reasonable price point, enabling me to reach a broader market. BBB has a symbiotic relationship with the Bloom events I hold, blending fashion and music to create a cohesive brand experience. By establishing BBB, I aim to achieve creative and financial freedom, allowing me to focus on upskilling and developing a more avant-garde line, Bouquet Studios.

What were you trying to achieve from the project at the time? How has this evolved and what are you trying to communicate through the brand now?

Initially, Bouquet was just a creative outlet and essentially still is. But over the past year or so, I’ve taken it on full-time; I’m aiming to grow it much bigger than I ever imagined. Ultimately, I’d like to just communicate unison and diversification through well-made clothes and carefully curated electronic music events.

How would you describe your label to someone who’s never seen it before?

I’d like to think of the label almost as a place, or a time in space rather than an object or something tangible. Whether you are wearing BBB or you’re at one of the Bloom events, we aim to enable you to do exactly that – bloom.

What are you most proud of in your work on your label?

I never really give myself too much praise or become too proud of anything at any given point. Sure, I’m proud for a moment, but then it’s quickly overrun by the next task or goal at hand. I always strive to do better the next time, whether it be in regards to releasing a garment or throwing an event. However, I am proud that the wheels are in motion.

What do you wish you knew when you started?

I wish I knew that nothing ever runs smoothly in the rag-trading business.

Who do you think is most exciting in Australian fashion right now?

Posture Studios and Pussy Pour Homme both excite me; I’m always keen to see what’s around the corner with those two. Softmodality [is also] coming with some crazy pearl and stone jewellery! Also excited to see what Sean Serror comes out of the gates with. He’s crazy at what he does.

What about the Australian fashion industry needs to change?
