Style swap: Can a couple successfully style each other for date night?

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CONVERSE

Chucks in love.

Just as it’s often easy to spot a couple on their first date (positive body language, nervous eye contact), there are a few telltale signs of a long-term relationship. After years spent sharing everything, it’s not uncommon for couples to start coordinating outfits – even unintentionally.

For Melbourne creator Hannah Sfetcopoulos and her boyfriend Otis, the key to a successful seven-year relationship lies in thoughtful date nights, small surprises and frequent fit checks. “We borrow from each other’s wardrobes all the time,” Hannah tells me. “We both have intersections [within our senses of] style, especially our op-shopped pieces, which are usually fairly androgynous!”

With over 50,000 followers on TikTok, Hannah is known for her whimsical, experimental approach to getting dressed, guided by the mantra ‘if you’re putting it on, you’re pulling it off.’ While she’s partial to bright colours and clashing prints, Oscar’s style is more nostalgic, with nods to the ’80s and ’90s. “Oscar is definitely influenced by film and television from when he was growing up,” Hannah says. “We help each other with choosing our outfits all the time.”

Among other pieces like graphic tees and cozy knitwear, the pair share the same taste in footwear: Converse sneakers. “They fit so easily into our everyday style,” Hannah says. “They go with almost everything in our wardrobes.” In the spirit of (almost) Valentine’s Day, we asked the couple to style each other for a date night. Scroll on to see what they came up with.

While there weren’t any huge surprises during the style-swap process (the pair have been together since high school, after all), Hannah says their approach to outfit planning was very different. “Our personalities did shine through with this challenge,” she laughs. “Where Oscar wrote down some ideas and spent some time organising, I got a hold of his wardrobe and just pulled things out until it clicked. Very us.”

For Hannah’s date-night look, Otis chose the Chuck Taylor All Star Lift Lows from the Converse Valentine’s Day collection, paired with a cropped white T-shirt and ’90s-style maxi skirt. “I chose tartan to mix with the white shirt, and socks to pull the red of the Converse in. I love the look of platform sneakers with a flowy skirt, which is a staple in Hannah’s wardrobe,” he explains.

While trying to think of other elements to add, Otis was able to put himself into Hannah’s shoes (literally). “I realised I can add anything with the right amount of confidence,” he explains. “I paired the green bag with a green headscarf, which pulled everything together.”

For Oscar, Hannah chose a pair of classic black Chuck Taylor All Star High Tops, paired with shorts and red socks. “The shorts are some thrifted AMCO ones I got a long time ago, which are hemmed to be a bit shorter,” she says. “I love the ’80s summer vibes of short-shorts and a singlet tucked in. The socks are actually mine… I love the classic Chucks with a splash of Valentine’s Day red.”
