Hey, I Like Your Style! Exploring the wardrobe of Naarm-based designer, Corin Corcoran

VISUALS BY GOOD GRAVY MEDIA

WORDS BY IZZY WIGHT

“I’ve saved money for clothing and found pieces on the side of the road, and I value them all the same.”

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years), so we’ve introduced a new series Hey, I Like Your Style!, diving into the fashion psyche of our favourite creatives. We’re talking the good, the bad and the 2007.

While the internet has made our fashion icons feel closer than ever before, even the most effortless of outfits came from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives and lives chronicled in 30-second clips just don’t tell the full story.

These are the stories behind the wardrobes, exploring how we develop our own personal style. There’s a brilliance behind the way we choose to express ourselves and at FJ, we know every outfit has a story.

This week, we’re taking a step inside the wardrobe of Naarm-based designer, creative director and actor, Corin Corcoran. Her eclectic style is best described in pieces: chunky New Rock boots, sculptural statement pieces and oversized tees, usually purchased from brands like Clothing the Gaps or HoMie.

As the founder of her own eponymous label, Corin’s wardrobe is about self-expression and garments with a message. “I prefer my money to go towards a cause or a small business,” Corin says. “I only buy things I really love.”

A special thanks to Creative Victoria who made this iteration of Hey, I Like Your Style! possible. Watch above and read on below for Corin’s style journey.

I’m Corin Corcoran, a Wailwan designer based in Naarm. I like to wear vintage, ethically sourced clothing; [pieces from] Blak businesses; statement pieces and thought-provoking clothing.

What has your style evolution looked like? Do you feel like you’ve gained confidence in the way you dress?

I’ve had every phase possible, which has helped shape my styling and designing of clothing. I had my emo phase, my hippie phase and my lad phase.

I’m grateful I had cringey phases… it helped me to find what I really like and am drawn to. My clothing and styling are where I get my main source of confidence; it also helps me to find similar people.

Personal style is a journey. Have you ever felt like you needed to fit into a particular fashion box?

Yes, growing up I definitely was trying to fit into a box. I would copy my older sister’s style to try and be cool. Even in my early days of designing, I felt like I was just making things people would like or that I thought would sell rather than what I like, which my brand has now evolved into.

What are the most expensive and least expensive items in your wardrobe?

I’ve saved money for clothing and found pieces on the side of the road, and I value them all the same. But, the most expensive piece [I own] I put in for with my mum and my nan. [We bought] an Alexander McQueen 1998 dress from the Joan collection as a collector item. The cheapest items I’ve found in op shop free bins as a broke teen; I would happily take home pieces I found on the road.

What is the most meaningful fashion piece you own?

One of my favourite pieces I own is a jacket I inherited from my Pop that I use to walk around his house in as a kid. It’s ripped and covered in paint, but I will always treasure it.

What’s in your cart at the moment?

Currently and always are vintage New Rock boots, and runway pieces I will never be able to afford.

What are the wardrobe items you wear on repeat?

I will always have on a Clothing the Gaps statement tee, a patchwork leather coat I got for a job I did, and my New Rock boots (that are falling apart)

Who are your favourite local designers? And where do you like to shop?

Rowland Vision, Clothing the Gaps, Wackie Ju, Comme Passion, Sabatucci, Ramp Tramp Tramp Stamp, Eat Yrself, Maroske Peech and Faunish. I like to shop at local Blak businesses, op shops, independent brands and designer stores. Also, eBay is the best!

How important is conscious shopping/styling to you?

Super important. It’s also what I’ve based my own brand around. I prefer my money to go towards a cause or a small business, I only buy things I really love.

Any fashion regrets?

A lot, I remember as a pre-teen I would wear a tutu and Avril Lavigne fishnet gloves. I’m also grateful I had my awkward phases.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I love Mobcaution and Daddy Issues.

Check out Corin’s label here.
