Here’s what people wore to days four and five of Afterpay Australian Fashion Week

WORDS BY FASHION JOURNAL

Looks for days.

People-watching is one of our favourite pastimes, and there’s arguably nowhere better to people-watch than a fashion week. The colour, the glitz and glam, the sleek and minimal and the avant-garde all collide at these events.

Afterpay Australian Fashion Week was on this week and as an official media partner, FJ had the pleasure of being on the ground at Carriageworks for the latter half of it. Obviously, there was (as always) a plethora of excellent outfits so we captured some of our favourites below.

Briar, she/her

“I’m wearing Ramp Tramp Tramp Stamp shorts and a vintage Christian Lacroix T-shirt and vintage boots and football socks.”

Olivia, she/her

“I’m wearing a Loewe brooch and a little crochet flower belt. The blazer’s Hansen and Gretel, the shirt and pants are vintage and the shoes are Senso. My bag’s Bottega Veneta and my sunnies are Gucci. I’m wearing this because it makes me feel chic and comfortable and confident, and that’s the whole point of fashion.”

Sinead, she/they

“Everything is thrifted except my shoes. This is two separate dresses I put on top of each other because I’m really into layering right now and I wanted to pin the hems up and down just to make the silhouette a little more fun. I’m just so into balletcore right now – who isn’t – so I needed to put ribbons around my ankles. I think they’re just off a dressing robe or something.”

Liana, she/her

“I’m wearing my KitX dress which is 100 per cent post-consumer plastic – that’s why I love it so much. This is a Stand Studio coat, the bag is Balenciaga, the sunglasses are Poppy Lissiman and the boots are Chloe.”

Kat, she/her

“I’m wearing my vintage motocross boots, a vintage set I got off Depop and the underwear is Elas crochet – it’s a custom set she made for me. My bag is Dior Hardcore.”

Ella, she/her

“I love a dress over pants combo and I’m wearing this embroidered floral halter dress from Melbourne label Perple. The jeans are my housemates (thanks Liv!) and I’ve had these Mansur Gavriel slingbacks for around five years and they’ve served me well.”

Kaydee, she/her

“My goal for Fashion Week was to wear a lot of the things already in my wardrobe. My dress is from Asos Design, my bag is from Colette and my shoes are from Cotton On. It’s really simple but once you pair it together with makeup it all works. My inspo was Rihanna at the Met Gala in 2017.”

Eloise, she/her

“I am wearing Alix Higgins from 2022 – it’s actually Alix’s dress. The reason I’m wearing it is because I was at the Alix Higgins show this morning and it was incredible. I added sunnies I was gifted by Szade and the jacket is from my friend Andie Wheeler who is a stylist. I paired it with Tony Bianco boots and a cute ‘90s style bag – no idea what the brand is.”

Basjia, she/her

“I’m wearing a Paul McCann dress because we love supporting Indigenous designers.”

Xander, he/him

“This top is Alix Higgins, the shirt is Khourh and the keyring is Xi Wu Studios who just had their show. The pants are Cos and the shoes are Nike.”

Cait, she/her

“I’m wearing a top I borrowed from my workmate – it’s from a secondhand store but it sort of reminds me of an old Acne long-sleeve mesh I used to pine over. The pants and detachable mini are by Sourtai and are from Jolie Laide, a great Melbourne store. My shoes are secondhand Maryam Nassir Zadeh from Goodbyes and my bag is from a new Melbourne brand, Sage Avenue. I’ve always been fond of layering skirts and dresses over pants, so this look feels very me.”

Arielle, she/her

“This is my first ever Fashion Week and the first fashion show I’ve ever been to. I had a panic about what to wear but because I’m from Naarm I could only pack one pair of shoes and one jacket so ignore those. I got the skirt from the op shop ages ago and it’s so iconic. My mum custom-made me this Sexiaz Lingerie ruched top to go with it and I borrowed this Prada bag of my sister.”

Chela, she/her

“I’m wearing Brendan Plummer with some yellow tights and Nike sneakers.”

Katharina, she/her

“I’m wearing a skirt from my brand Katarina Lou and everything else is vintage. The shirt is my mum’s old Kenzo shirt and her old Burberry jacket which we love. The shoes are Ralph Lauren. I made my bag as well. I dress to feel confident, fabulous and colourful!”

Dani, she/her

“I’m wearing Acler today. I chose it because I love the colour. I love a tonal moment and I love the sleeves.”

Alinora, they/she

“I’m wearing some cowboy boots I got on Depop because obviously. I got the dress from a sample sale at a company I used to work for. The shirt is from Harlow which is an exclusively plus size brand based out of Melbourne and they’re killing the game.”
