Local label Dylan Kain’s latest collection is sustainably made and limited-edition

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DYLAN KAIN
WORDS BY HANNAH COLE

Your new go-to bag.

Going into this summer, I plan to live large and live free. There will be long lunches that turn into dinners and dance parties and days spent becoming one with nature, exploring and breathing in the fresh air. I will choose my outfits based on a feeling or mood, for the pleasure of myself and no one else.

Enough of the doom and gloom – it’s time to appreciate the inconsequential but powerful speck that is being alive. It’s the kind of summer I imagine Dylan Kain has in mind. For the local leather goods and accessories label, it’s all about embracing cool girl style in a sustainable way.

The label’s SS22 collection, Forever Chic, plays on the innocence of the noughties – you know, before a pandemic, impending climate disasters, etc – and transforms it for the modern era. Starring fashion darling, actress and creative director Sarah Ellen, the campaign highlights the effortlessly cool.

Opt for black, sleek, structured and minimalist when it comes to clothing, and let your accessories do the talking. The leather goods, of course, are seasonally appropriate for many an adventure and outing: brunching, picnicking, dining and boogieing.

A little bit grungy and a little bit romantic (just the way we like it), the springtime palette includes shades of fawn, cornflower blue and classic black. The range is made up of four key styles, each visually delectable and wholly practical.

The Ella Patent Phone Bag satisfies the craving for a mini bag that’s more like a tote. The extended length is not only functional, but a true style differentiator, plus the detachable card holder is exceptionally cute.

Dylan Kain’s signature Baby Rodriguez style makes a welcome return in the new colourways – it’s the perfect mini shoulder bag for safekeeping your most precious assets. For work and play, the Paltrow Patent Bag adds just the right amount of professionalism (but never in a boring way). Her sharp lines, boxy shape and striking chunky gold chain make this piece a go-to for all occasions.

Rounding out the range is the Rhea Sling Bag, a through-and-through noughties resurgence piece. With its curved features, delightfully mini size and handy detachable gold chain, it’s sure to become your go-to.

The sustainable way

But, as the label stipulates, it’s not just about looking cool. It’s about doing things sustainably, too. Dylan Kain has long been known for prioritising conscious production and fabric choices (remember the wine leather?). For this collection, each certified Italian leather was selected from the Leather Working Group (LWG), a not-for-profit organisation driving sustainable leather production.

Tanneries are certified based on their overall environmental performance, considering aspects like water and energy usage, air emissions and waste. Typically an industry that uses many toxic pollutants, is resource intensive and releases catastrophic greenhouse gas emissions, LWG offers assurance that your cute summer essential ticks all the boxes.

And in good news for the planet (but bad news for us), the latest bags are produced in small quantities as limited edition pieces – it’s now or never to get your hands on one of these styles.
