How to elevate a casual outfit, according to a stylist

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PLATYPUS SHOES
WORDS BY RUBY KOHANE

Good things start from the ground up.

Ever wondered how a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt can look impeccable on one person, and completely average on another? Or why striped trackpants look daggy on your uncle but strike the perfect balance of edgy yet refined when worn by your effortlessly cool workmate?

Sometimes it seems like a magic power, the ability to make an outfit stand out – like it’s something you either have or you don’t. But there’s a key component of casual outfitting that can seamlessly bring everything together: the right sneaker. Platypus Shoes’ latest campaign, POV Platypus, highlights the power and versatility of casual footwear.

Styled by Australian stylist Molly Johnstone, it’s a reminder that sneakers are the easiest way to inject interest into a laidback outfit, whether it’s by opting for a pair of vibrantly coloured low-profile Asics or chunky white and silver New Balances. To further demystify what makes casual dressing actually work (and what sneakers we should opt for) we spoke to Molly, who explains that if you want to take an everyday outfit to the next level, you should always start with the shoes.

Hi Molly! In a world where pretty much anything goes – pyjamas on the red carpet, lingerie for any occasion, socks with the glitziest of heels – what does ‘casual’ mean to you?

Casual means comfort but with a statement piece. The stand-out might be printed tracksuit pants, large sunglasses frames or a bright accessory. Matching lounge sets with a trench coat thrown over the top work too, just make sure they’re oversized.

What are the foundations of casual styling?

I have two recipes for a casual outfit. First is starting with the footwear as the colourful piece and toning it down or matching it with the apparel, then matching a bag and sunglasses to the shoes. If the clothing is louder in colour or print I will tone it down with the footwear by choosing black, white or natural shoes and accessories. Personally, I love to keep it basic – pants, T-shirt, coat – and opt for the loudest sneakers and accessories.

What takes a casual outfit to the next level?

Casual outfits don’t need to be boring. They can be the funnest outfits to express your personality. I’m loving bag charms at the moment. Adding multiple to hang off your handbag is an easy way to elevate a simple look. Also, your choice of footwear will play a huge part in taking a casual outfit to the next level. Choose the boldest pair you own.

Any advice for curating a casual wardrobe that’s both elevated and sustainable?

Invest in quality T-shirts, tank tops and long sleeves in different colours. You will be able to mix, match and layer them to create multiple outfits. Start with black, white, grey, beige and red. Wearing T-shirts over shirts is super flattering and transitions easily from day to night by switching sneakers to boot heels. Depop and vintage markets are also great for keeping your wardrobe circular and sustainable.

What should we look for in a shoe to elevate an outfit?

Colour, pattern, platform… anything with a point of difference.

With so many different silhouettes and brands on the market, what makes a pair of shoes worth the investment?

Comfort. Beyond that, I love conversation-starting shoes. Something nobody’s seen before. When investing in a new pair to add to your collection a helpful approach is to visualise styling them with three to five outfits already in your wardrobe.

What trends are you loving right now, and what do you predict to come next?

Suede is having a big moment, especially in sneakers. I think this will continue to have a big impact across the market.

What are your top do’s and don’ts for styling a casual outfit?

Do’s: have fun with it. Don’ts: there are no rules!
