WORDS BY MAGGIE ZHOU AND IZZY WIGHT

I’m definitely soul mates with my wardrobe.”

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years) and our series Hey, I Like Your Style! dives into the fashion psyche of our favourite creatives. We’re talking the good, the bad and the 2007.

While the internet has made our fashion icons feel closer than ever before, even the most effortless of outfits came from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives and lives chronicled in 30-second clips just don’t tell the full story.

These are the stories behind the wardrobes, exploring how we develop our own personal style. There’s a brilliance behind the way we choose to express ourselves and at FJ, we know every outfit has a story. If there’s one thing you need to know about Sydney-based content creator Ethan Lazarof, it’s that he’s positively giddy about fashion.

As this week’s Hey, I Like Your Style! spotlight, we stepped inside his past and present wardrobe. Here, he gushes about how inspiration is all around him – from the “current times in [his] life, [his] friends, vintage clothing that [he] find[s] on thrift adventures, [to] hand-me-downs from [his] parents and grandparents”. Read on to hear about his “reactive approach to styling” and the way jewellery can transform an outfit.

Hey, I’m Ethan and I’m a content creator based in Sydney! I’d say what I like to wear is anything oversized, comfortable [and] clean. [I] always have an excessive amount of accessories and jewellery. I love to throw a little craziness in my day-to-day just to feel something.

What has your style evolution looked like? Do you feel like you’ve gained confidence in the way you dress?

My style evolution has definitely been a big one. I’d say the change of style has hit me like a truck! I think 2014 to 2018 were the worst eras of outfits in my life, they haunt me daily. I definitely love to reference some of those past fashion choices in my current wardrobe as they feel nostalgic to style with everyday outfits.

Things like patchy camouflage prints, studs and heavily distressed garments I tend to wear most days as [they] add a little bit of character and individuality to the emotion I want to portray with my outfit. I have gained so much confidence in the way I dress, purely from the way that my wardrobe makes me feel. I’m definitely soul mates with my wardrobe and you can probably tell from the way I wear my clothes.

Personal style is a journey. Have you ever felt like you needed to fit into a particular fashion box?

Oh, most definitely! I’ve felt that I needed to be a certain body type to feel okay with what clothes I put on my body or that I always had to be up to date with the latest trends and pieces. This definitely led me to empty pockets from the amount of clothes I was purchasing at the time and a wardrobe I was not happy with after every trend cycle. I’ve learnt how to deal with this by focusing on quality over quantity in recent years and having a uniform wardrobe.

Take us back to those awkward teenage years. Do you have any fashion regrets?

SKINNY JEANS WITH RIPS AND A CUFFED ANKLE!! It was definitely a slay at the time, but times have changed and those jeans had their moment but truly deserved a place in the depths of hell.

What are the most expensive and least expensive items in your wardrobe?

The most expensive item in my wardrobe would definitely have to be my Bottega Veneta Tire Boots. They broke the bank at the time, but the cost per wear since I purchased them mid-last year is probably down to one cent. I just can’t stop wearing them!

My least expensive item in my wardrobe that I can not stop wearing is my Balenciaga Lego City Bag. I found her two years ago on Depop for like $120, which at the time was a lot for me but I’m so happy I purchased it. Again, I haven’t stopped wearing it!

What is the most meaningful fashion piece you own?

The absolute most meaningful items I own would have to be my collection of jewellery, I never leave the house without a neck, fist and arm full of it. From unique hand-me-down Boucheron rings passed down from my grandmother to small businesses like KazMexico, Graedance and Millie Savage, these pieces mean so much to me as they were gifts from friends and family. Also, I become myself when I wear my jewellery; it just makes a simple outfit feel so personal, individual and perfect in my eyes.

Who or what influences your style?

Literally everything influences my style! Current times in life, my friends, vintage clothing that I find on thrift adventures, hand-me-downs from my parents and grandparents, the list goes on. Some individuals that I draw inspo from are Alexander Roth, Tyler Mazaheri and Lori Hirshleifer. I’d say I have a reactive approach to styling and can change with the times.

What fashion piece are you saving for right now?

The list is never-ending! The holy trinity right now would be a Chopova Lowena charm necklace, Briar Will Firenze T-shirt, Adidas Gothcore pants (which I can not find ANYWHERE) and another Balenciaga City Bag. The more unique the colourway the better!

What are the wardrobe items you wear on repeat?

I’m not one for fast fashion but Jaded LDN just has the best-fitting jeans. The bagginess, wide-leg and relaxed silhouette of them are just perfection! I thrifted a vintage 100 per cent cashmere black trench coat from Rozelle Markets that is just *chef’s kiss*. I recently bought a Bichon Eyelet Long Strap and let me tell you, she is so good for any outfit. It just adds that little extra detail to every fit!

Who are your favourite local designers?

Oh gosh, where do I even start? There are so many talented local designers! Some brands on my raider are Briar Will (jerseys are insane), Karlaidlaw (her shoulder bags are a dream), Speed (god-tier tailoring) [and] Wackie Ju (layers layers layers layers!).
