Why fabrics matter when it comes to sleepwear, according to a buyer
Sweet dreams.
In this hectic world, we’ve got so many obstacles that get in the way of a good night’s sleep. Whether it be the constant blue light distraction from our computers and phones, the residual caffeine in our systems from the 17 coffees we need to function or the unending thoughts that won’t stop cycling through our minds, it seems like getting a full eight hours is almost an impossible challenge.
This is why choosing the right sleepwear is of utmost importance. The last thing we need is to be distracted by overheating or itchiness. Sure, we want our pyjamas to be cute as well, but if we’re being realistic, comfort takes top priority. We’re in our beds for a third of our lives (or more if you’re particularly fond of cosiness). There’s no way we’re going to spend all that time uncomfortable.

What’s more, spending too much time in fabric that’s too tight and unbreathable can have adverse consequences – especially for women who can be more prone to thrush and other irritations. No, thank you!
Of course, there’s always the option of sleeping in your birthday suit, but then you can’t go grab a glass of water or watch TV on the couch (unless you have especially progressive housemates). There’s just something about finding the perfect, ultra-comfortable loungewear set that just feels like the ultimate luxury.
When you’re shopping for sleepwear, especially online, it might be tempting to grab a lustrous satin robe or a lacey polyester gown. While they might look cute from afar, trust us: once they’re on your skin, you’re going to wish you considered your fabric choice more.
Sussan’s Sleepwear Buyer says naturally-based fabrics such as cotton, viscose and modal are the best options. “Australian cotton is the perfect choice for breathable and comfortable sleepwear. With hypoallergenic properties, cotton is soft and gentle for sensitive skin,” they tell me.
There are different varieties of cotton that can cater to your temperature preference and season changes as well. For something lighter, the buyer says it’s best to opt for poplin, seersucker or jersey. For something a little more insulating, try flannelette or brushed cotton jersey.
Viscose can be a tricky one because it’s a hybrid of natural and synthetic fibres. Sussan’s specialised Lenzing Ecovero viscose is made from treated sustainable wood pulp. Modal, made from beechwood fibres, is incredibly light and soft – great for those hot nights. An added benefit is these fabrics are made to last and will only get softer with each wash. “To ensure a restful and uninterrupted night’s sleep, comfort is really found in the fabrication,” they add.
When it comes to choosing a style for your sleepwear pieces, Sussan’s Sleepwear Buyer says to keep it loose and flowy. It’s not the time to opt for something bodycon, like an activewear top or a pair or a pair of bike shorts, no matter how good they may feel when you’re at the gym. “Off-the-body silhouettes are key,” they say. “Ensure nothing feels too tight or restrictive, [it makes] it more challenging to fall asleep.”
They suggest looking for bottoms with stretchy elasticized drawstring waistbands rather than buttons or, god forbid, nasty pokey little zippers. Think matching cotton sets with an oversized top and shorts or effortlessly-draped nighties (remember that nap dress trend?). For a little extra warmth when you’re wandering around the house, a plush robe and a pair of fuzzy slippers are always a welcome addition.
Because sleepwear silhouettes tend to be fairly standard, the designs can really help set them apart. Whether you prefer vibrant all-over patterns or simple colourways, there are options that are made to suit everyone’s tastes. Once you’ve swapped to sleepwear in soft, breathable and comfortable natural fabrics, it’ll completely change your bedtime game. All that’s left to do is brush your teeth, wash your face and get tucked in.
