The runway looks from Y-3 Spring ’16 Menswear collection

Please don’t ever leave us Yohji.

At age 71, Yohji Yamamoto is still very much on point. The designer continues to lead the way in modern sportswear and functional fashion with his label Y-3.

His latest menswear collection for Spring ’16 is all that sportswear should be, encapsulating androgyny and unisex style in structured and sleek, yet relaxed designs.

Y-3 wasn’t always as effortless as Yohji’s style suggests however. After eight years of partnership with adidas, the minimalist mastermind felt Y-3, for the casual outfit “became a little bit boring.”

After controversy over whether to stop or continue the label, they (adidas and Yohji) finally decided to continue with sportswear, but Yohji suggested it should be more sport in spirit and that this collection should be more “motion and action.”

This latest collection definitely reminds us just how good Y-3 really is.

The clothes hold drama and edge in true Yohji style. The words ‘I don’t bother you’ and ‘don’t bother me’ feature on basic tee and singlet designs underneath a selection of varying outerwear pieces. The triple-stripe motif also made an appearance, highlighting Y-3’s sportswear nature despite some more formal, chic additions to the range. Colours ran classic black, white and grey, with electric blue and vibrant red prominent feature colours, as well as multicoloured graphics, that read serious sports luxe.

Billowing and baggy styles are a focus throughout the entire collection, but as we are aware, Yohji knows the perfect balance between elegance and boxy styles. And that is why we love him.
