Anyone even adjacent to fashion will know that Australian Fashion Week (AFW) dominated most media headlines and social media feeds earlier this month. From runways to the street style, it was a busy week full of spectacle and fanfare.

With AFW dominating so much of the conversation, there’s a chance you might’ve missed the other comings and goings of the local fashion landscape. Melbourne saw several store openings, from the Northside to the Southside, Adelaide announced its own Fashion Week and the National Indigenous Fashion Award officially dropped. Find our recap below.

The National Indigenous Fashion Awards (also known as NIFA) is an annual ceremony, hosted by the Indigenous Fashion Projects (IFP). The awards aim to spotlight the innovation of First Nations peoples, with categories spanning Community Collaboration, Textile Design, Wearable Art (and more). The full shortlist of nominees officially dropped on May 26, with winners announced at the NIFA sunset ceremony on Larrakia Country August 5.
Man-tle makes its Gertrude Street debut

Perth-born label Man-tle has made the journey east, opening its first Melbourne store. Nestled on Gertrude Street and neighbours to Kowtow, Haven and Friends with Frank, it’s a chance for fans of the label to try its signature shirts, bomber jackets and trousers in person.
Mejuri Lands in Melbourne

Jewellery label Mejuri has opened its second Australian location at Emporium Melbourne on Lonsdale Street. The space is fit-out with natural stone finishes, soft lighting and sculptured pendant lighting, alongside timber cabinetry. Jordan Gogos presents Parádeisos at UNSW

Fresh from his solo runway at Australian Fashion Week (AFW), artist and fashion designer Jordan Gogos is presenting his first solo institutional exhibition at UNSW Galleries. ‘Parádeisos’ centres around a Greek-inspired vision of a “cultivated paradise”, bringing together textile and photographic works. The exhibition is on until August 16, with free entry.
Adelaide Fashion Week is back

Save the date! Adelaide Fashion Week is returning from October 7 to 11. The five-day schedule will span runways, workshops, talks and other experiences, with the official designer lineup to come. Last year, featured labels included The Wolf Gang, Katya Komarova and Van Brussel.
Briar Will debuts its first brick-and-mortar store

On May 22, Melbourne-based label Briar Will opened the doors to its first-ever physical store. The airy, vibrant space in Reservoir offers a chance to browse the racks and try on the brand’s signature pieces in real-life, and also marked the official launch of its new collection, Earth Party.
The Cut takes up residence at Libertine Parfumerie

Earlier this month, jewellery label The Cut celebrated the opening of its new Armadale space. Following its original space in Paddington and St James Trust Building studio in Sydney’s CBD, this marks the brand’s third brick-and-mortar space. House within Libertine Parfumerie’s storefront, the showroom operates on an appointment-only basis, offering both ready-to-wear and custom options.
Vrg Grl opens the doors in Bondi

Australian fashion label Vrg Grl has landed in Bondi, opening the doors to its second Sydney shopfront. Designed by Melbourne-based studio, Studio Doherty, the beach-side space features concrete flooring, stainless steel details and a warm colour palette of mustard and terracotta tones.
