Australia’s most remote Aboriginal community held its first ever fashion show

“It was great, it was a lot of fun, it was really happy.”

Well how’s this for good news?

The most remote Aboriginal community in Australia has come together for its very first fashion show.

Round. of. applause.

The event took place in the small town of Kiwirrkurra, 850km west of Alice Springs. It grew from a life skills program, aiming to teach local community members about grooming and self-care.

From there, the idea for a fashion show was born. The community started writing requests for donations of dresses, suits and shoes, and outfits started arriving by post from all over Australia soon after.

Around 30 models from the local community took part in the catwalk, with ages ranging from 10 to 25.

It is reported that every member of the 200-person community attended the fashion show.

Director of the community, Raymond Olodoodi, told ABC News:

“It was great, it was a lot of fun, it was really happy.

“It was loud when it was fashion night, very different.”

The event itself was held in an old tin shade, previously an old store that burnt down years ago. According to youth development officer, Thomas Worrigal, the runway was constructed out of repurposed materials including old solar panels, spinifex and rocks.

“The stage was made out of the old Kiwirrkurra junk that we found laying around everywhere in the community itself,” he said.

There are hopes the event will become a fixture on the Kiwirrkurra calendar, with Worrigal remarking:

“All the outfits are all stored away ready for the next one.”
