Magnolia Maymuru announced a face of Chadstone’s SS16 campaign
Yes girl.
Magnolia ‘Maminydjama’ Maymuru made headlines recently when she was announced as the first Aboriginal woman to represent NT at Miss World Australia.
And today, the 19-year-old from Yirrkala is continuing to push boundaries. Magnolia has just been announced as a face of Chadstone’s SS16 campaign.
“Chadstone is thrilled to add Magnolia to the lineup of incredible talent to have featured in our campaigns over previous years”, says Chadstone Marketing Director, Tanya Lunardon.
The model hails from far-east Arnhem land and was first spotted by the director of NT Fashion Week in 2014. But she chose to focus on finishing Year 12 before deciding to try modelling last year.
Magnolia was recently selected to compete in the Miss World National finals, the first traditional indigenous model ever to be selected.
Combined with today’s announcement of the forthcoming Chadstone campaign, it’s a strong indication Magnolia has an exciting career ahead.
“The chance to work with Chadstone is a dream come true, and I know my family and community will be so proud,” says Magnolia.
However, for the young model, there’s more to the opportunity than just her career.
“I want to be a role model so that beauty is seen as universal, no matter what colour, size or shape you are,” she said.
“Through modelling and this campaign with Chadstone, I hope I can challenge the way most of Australia views Indigenous life.”
