Rains is suing Zara for copying its staple raincoat design

Another day, another fast fashion chain accused of ripping off designs.
Earlier this year, US skate magazine Thrasher called out H&M for stealing its flaming T-shirt logo. Before that, independent designer Tuesday Bassen took Zara to task for copying her designs.
Today, Danish outerwear label Rains announced it is filing a lawsuit against Zara’s parent company, Inditex, for allegedly copying its staple raincoat design.
The Copenhagen-based label is known for its simple, quality raincoats and is requesting a halt on all sales of Zara’s rain jackets, plus compensation for lost profits.
Zara’s raincoat has been spotted on sale all over the world, plus on its website, which means Rains could be after quite a hefty compensation claim.
In preparation for court, Rains has pictured both jackets next to each other (above), showing they are virtually impossible to distinguish.
Co-founder of Rains, Daniel Brix Hesselager, said:
“Zara has copied some of our core products – classics – items which we have worked relentlessly on to help define our brand. We’re talking about products that will not change from season to season. So this copying must stop immediately.”
It’s a brave move taking on a giant retail chain like Zara, but Hesselager doesn’t seem put off.
“Their size and resources are great, but we are willing to go as far as it takes,” he added.
It’s not the first time Rains has battled over copyright infringement. Rains previously won a case against another Danish label, Tif-Tiffy, after it was accused of ripping off Rains’ aesthetic.
