The FJ Guide to: Fashion BFFLs
Our favourite fashion friendships of all time.
Here at Fashion Journal, we know the most important person in fashion is not a designer or magazine editor, stylist or photographer – actually, you probably just texted her. Who? Your best friend of course!
Who else but your number one gal pal can be your constant street style inspiration, personal shopping assistant or occasional fashion police officer? Anna Wintour knows all too well the fashion power of the best friend, giving the March cover of US Vogue to high-achieving besties Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss. To celebrate, here’s a look at some of our favourite fashion friendships of all time.
Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss
Taylor and Karlie met on the Victoria’s Secret catwalk (naturally) and have been best friends ever since. Taylor says on meeting Karlie they were “just like, ‘You. My friend. Now.’” Taylor seems to be having a great time since swapping boyfriends for girlfriends – Lena Dunham, Lorde, Cara Delevingne and the Haim sisters are all regular features on Taylor’s Instagram. Her incredibly photogenic road trip with her number one Karlie Kloss featured on the cover of the March issue of Vogue… something for you and your bestie to aim for next time you go on holiday.
Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie
This friendship, although maybe about as genuine as Nicole Richie’s hair extensions, defined early-naughties fashion. Juicy couture, sparkly eyeshadow, small dogs and ruffled pastel minis were The Simple Life staples, and a look we all probably strived for some time around 2003. We think uggs and trucker caps are about due for a comeback.
Jay-Z and Kanye West
These two make the list because they are without doubt the best-dressed bromance in town. Kanye West’s recent achievements include debuting his collaboration with adidas at New York Fashion Week and turning his wife into an actual fashion icon. His main man Jay doesn’t dress too shabby himself. And he’s married to Beyoncé, so he wins.
Cara Delevigne and Jourdan Dunn
Cara and Jourdan recently cemented their friendship with matching double-D tattoos on their lower backs – because nothing says friendship in 2015 like getting inked together.
Kate Moss and Naomi Watts
Twenty-five years of friendship and these supers are still going strong. They met as teenagers in the early ’90s, and bonded over their South London roots while travelling the world. Their party-hard and live-fast lifestyle may have slowed down (a little…. maybe) but their friendship certainly has not.
Mary-Kate and Ashley
Technically these best friends are related, but the expression ‘joined at the hip’ was invented for the Olsen twins. After leaving their signature boho-chic (and Starbucks addiction) behind, they have founded successful labels The Row and Elizabeth and James.
Beyonce and Gwenyth Paltrow
Talk about a power couple. We all have those competitive friends who try to one-up you with their achievements. If you are Beyoncé and Gwyneth, those achievements are Grammy Award-winning albums and Oscar-nominated movies. But seriously, we would give away all our imaginary Oscars and Grammys to spend a night on Bey’s yacht gossiping with these two – they would have some stories.
