This brand is making 3D-printed sunglasses from recycled plastic
The future.
Kickstarter has brought the world a lot of goodness – men’s rompers, a Lisa Frank makeup collection, this fancy wine preserver and TLC’s final album. Now we’ve got our eyes on a new project that combines the wondrous world of 3D printing and environmentally-friendly fashion.
w.r.yuma (We Are Yuma) is a Belgium-based label set to launch 3D-printed sunglasses made from recycled plastics.
Founded by a mechanical engineer, the brand already has five designs featuring UV protective Italian lenses, a foldable cork case and a cleaning cloth made from recycled PET plastics. Styles are available with black frames which are printed using old black car dashboards. There’s also a limited line of white frames available which will be made from soft drink bottles.
The 3D-printing process means there’s no waste created in the making of each pair and the recycled plastic is sourced locally, so w.r.yuma’s carbon footprint is very low. All the glasses are designed to be recycled too, so once you’re done wearing them, they’ll be sent back and used to create new styles.
The Kickstarter campaign is set to finish in just over two weeks but has already surpassed its funding goal. If you want to order your own pair, click here to back the campaign.
