VAMFF Diary: Premium Runway 4
The one where street style steps up.
Back again for VAMFF Day Three and thank goodness the temperature had dropped. This provided bloggers with the perfect opportunity to get some sweat-free photos (reaaaaaal important for that Insta).
After watching some hip kids ride in on bicycles, a man resembling a pirate and a woman wearing a huge tulle gown (in Glinda the Good Witch fashion), I can confidently say, the street style had hit a new level.
After downing an espresso martini that I actually didn’t like because I don’t drink coffee, it was time for Premium Runway 4.
Alex Perry
Aussie fashion king Alex Perry was first up. He sent a selection of (expected) sleek dresses down the runway. Think fitted silhouettes and draping floor-length sleeves. The standouts were the Zimmermann-esque silk-layered mini and textured maxi dresses in warm colours like tangerine and daffodil yellow. They perhaps didn’t fit in with the first part of the collection but provided a much needed point of difference.
Carla Zampatti
Sorry Alex Perry, but it’s clear Carla does the chic styles better. Highlights were the entirely fringed garments reminiscent of ’20s flapper girls. Carla also proved she is queen of the neck tie, with these flowing from the neck to the base of full-length gowns. Ugh, amazing.
Ginger & Smart
I’d seen Ginger & Smart’s latest collection online and let me tell you, a computer screen doesn’t do these pretties justice. Cropped blazers and V-neck dresses were given texture with exposed raw threads, adding a point of difference to the Winter collection. The ladies behind the label also know how to nail a pattern or two, with salmon, grass green, navy and champagne coloured silk prints a focal point.
Martin Grant
A deep ink, velvet maxi dress with long sleeves and plunging neckline meant Martin Grant was off to a good great start. If you’re in need of a coat this winter, Martin Grant is the designer to visit. Navy collarless coats splashed with silver, and a quilted-leather swing jacket gave me (and errrybody) serious wardrobe envy.
Yeojin Bae
It’s all in the details. Neoprene dresses had subtle embellishments. Fitted black dresses showed a hint of fuchsia lining and fuchsia off-the-shoulder dresses had the reverse. Although only slightly visible, these were eye-catching and made the garments a little more special. It’s all about this bright pink, bold red and black in Yeojin’s world.
Dion Lee
Samantha Harris in an oversized wine-coloured fluffy wool coat. Need I say more?
They don’t call it the ‘Premium’ runway for nothing. I left feeling seriously impressed with Australia’s senior fashion designers. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt so far, it’s that plunging necklines are in. Get that chest out gals.
