We asked Pageant for career advice, what they really think about trends

Because the girls are killing it rn.

Since we caught up with Pageant earlier this year and marked them as ‘the next big thing’, they’ve definitely lived up to the claim.

The Australian label has been going from strength to strength lately, winning the Tiffany & Co. National Designer Award and delivering a killer Spring/Summer ’15 collection, Splash.

We went to visit the creative duo behind Pageant, Amanda Cummings and Kate Reynolds, to chat about their favourite pieces from Splash, advice for getting into the fashion industry and what they really think about trends.

What made you decide to pursue a career in fashion?

We think its just something that we have always wanted to do since we were about five years old. We have both always been interested in it and it’s been a part of our dreams.

What do you like about running your own label?

Because we have complete creative freedom.

How would you describe your personal style?

Kate: I am more of a tomboy, tough and functional. A bit utilitarian.

Amanda: I would say clean, minimal and thoughtful.

What is your favourite item of clothing in the new collection?

Kate: I am really into the Navigation anorak and shorts in the smoke stripe and wearing them as a twin set.

Amanda: I would say the Wave T-shirt dress in air blue.

Who or what is your source of style inspiration ?

We guess it stems from our friends. Also people in the street and girls on Instagram. There are a few girls on Instagram we are obsessed with. A lot of the accounts we follow are into art and post images that inspire us!

Would you say you like to set trends or adopt trends?

We are not really concerned with the idea of trends, but are more interested in capturing the moment of what is going on in the world at the time of making the collection. We like to see what other people are doing, and are interested in social behaviours more than, say, ‘trends’. We are more interested in being authentic to our own brand and the DNA of Pageant rather than imitating.

What do you think are the most popular pieces in the new collection?

The Splice swimwear, because they are really wearable cuts. There are three different tones and all the styles are designed to be able to mixed and matched. You can buy them as a pair or as separates and create your own look.

Where would you like your career in fashion to lead you?

To hopefully be a household name.

Can you predict any upcoming shifts for Pageant?

We are kind of expanding into soft tailoring and also prints.

Is there any advice you would give other girls wanting to be a part of the fashion industry?

Be prepared to work really hard. Intern at as many places as you can and try to help out on all different levels, so you can learn as much as you can. Especially, if you want to have your own business, you need to love it because it is a difficult industry to be a part of.
