Dip your toes in.

Winter dressing is certainly a challenge. You need to dress for frosty mornings, overheated offices, the occasional bout of rain and eye-watering winds. There’s an art to layering your merino thermals, knitted jumper and trusty winter coat so they can see you through the day.

Though socks and hosiery often seem to come as an afterthought, I’d argue they’re more of a key player than you might think. For one, a pair of thick, woollen socks add a crucial layer of insulation between your foot and calf and if you’re inclined, they can add a bright burst of colour to an otherwise gloomy grey day.

The appeal of tights, on the other hand, lies almost entirely in the fact that they’re vital in ensuring you can get plenty of wear out of your miniskirts all winter long. Considering the Fashion Journal office is perched in Melbourne’s inner city, we’re all too aware of what it takes to build a winter-proof outfit and we consider a good pair of socks and tights to be wardrobe essentials. Winter calls for extra toasty socks and I’ve been loving my wool socks I bought from Post Sole Studio last year. They’re super warm but not too chunky that I can’t wear them with my loafers, boots and Mary Janes. I got the grey marle colourway but the oxblood is gorgeous too.

Uniqlo Socks

Uniqlo’s rainbow sock wall is unmatched. They have multiple shades of every colour – there’s not just black, there’s black, dark grey, dark speckled grey, light grey (I think there’s 50 total). I also like occasionally pairing a bright red or blue sock with my otherwise all-black Melbourne winter uniform for a pop of colour. They’re roughly five dollars per pair but come with mult-buy deals so you can usually save by stocking up.

Kuwaii Merino Wool Tights

Chosen by: Holly Villagra, Branded Content and Production Coordinator

Melbourne label Kuwaii do a lush range of merino wool knitted tights. They’re simple, classic and most importantly, because it’s freezing at the moment, warm. It’s survival of the sexiest when you have a good pair of tights for winter.

I discovered Dal1992 earlier this year after writing a profile on the label and how it got started. Ever since, I’ve been in love with Pixie’s designs. You can find both original and knee-length sheer tights, with the Dal1992 monogram repeated throughout. They come in a range of colours – think red, grey, white, black and maroon – and they’re a sexy outfit maker.

Alpha60 Socks

Chosen by: Molly Griffin, Advertising and Partnerships Manager

Not buying socks from Kmart is a completely new shift for me and honestly, it took a while to change my mindset. I used to wonder what the point was in spending more than five dollars on a five-pack of socks especially when it felt so convenient and affordable in the moment, but those cheap socks would wear through within a week. I soon realised investing in better quality would save money and reduce environmental impact in the long run, so I turned to Alpha60. The Drew socks are beautifully made and I love the red for a little pop of colour.

Pinky and Kamal Socks

Chosen by: Holly Villagra, Branded Content and Production Coordinator

I really never need more reasons to shop colourful socks but I love Pinky and Kamal’s Souchy Range. These green ones in particular give that super effortless Princess Diana running across the carpark look.

Cos Semi-Sheer Tights

Chosen by: Molly Griffin, Advertising and Partnerships Manager

As someone who tends to be a bit clumsy, I’ve learned the hard way that not all tights are created equal, so finding a pair that are durable is an essential. The Sheertex Semi Sheer Tights from Cos strike the perfect balance between practical and stylish. The material is tough enough to withstand snags and runs, which is a lifesaver if you’re constantly bumping into things and catching on corners. At the same time, they’re semi-sheer, offering just enough thickness to keep me warm without crossing the line into looking like bulky school uniform stockings.

House of Holland for Pretty Polly tights

Chosen by: Lara Daly, Features Editor

This is so random and a huge throwback, but I just ordered some fishnet alphabet tights off eBay to wear to an Indie Sleaze-themed party I have coming up. I used to wear House of Holland x Pretty Polly sheer tights all the time as a teenager (Effy Stonem had a chokehold on me and every girl at my high school) and I think it’s time to bring them back? I’ll make an effort to wear them beyond the party, for sure.

I have Deiji socks that would be going on at least four years now. They’re thicker than your typical sock but perfect for cold winter days or cosy mornings lounging around the house. It changes but right now, they have clove, oat, cream and fog colour ways.
