Australian brand GALLYPANTZ is making lunchbox-themed scarves for all occasions

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GALLYPANTZ

WORDS BY KAYA MARTIN

The icing on the cake.

Growing up, the contents of your lunchbox were the ultimate status symbol. The feeling of lifting the lid of your prepacked lunch and seeing what snacks lie in waiting got you through the drawl of grade three timetables.

In our adult lives, bringing a packed lunch to work is less exciting (tuna and brown rice, anyone?). But one Australian creative is bringing that nostalgia back – and through charming scarves, no less.

Gal Cohen Kvatinsky is an Australian-based designer specialising in brand identity, graphics and packaging design. With an eye for detail and an understanding of the power of design, she married her two passions – food and accessories – and wrapped them into her signature Lunchbox Scarf collection.

The idea for GALLYPANTZ came more out of necessity than anything else. “I felt something was missing in my wardrobe,” says the 22-year-old designer. Gal set out with a vision to create a timeless, everyday luxury item that was effortlessly versatile in its uses.

Featuring timeless gingham patterns and embroidered motifs of tomatoes, lobsters and pears, the scarves almost resemble miniature picnic blankets. Each order comes hand-packed in a lunchbox, complete with a grocery shopping list, sweets and food stickers.

As Gal’s family is in the food industry, the theme was especially personal to her. “I come from a family who works with food every day so naturally I found myself always being involved with food – my connection with this world [gives] me a different perspective to all my projects.”

Ever since she was little, Gal always had a creative spirit. Her attraction to all things aesthetically pleasing led her to start an Instagram page as GALLYPANTZ at age 14. This led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in communication design which helped her become a full-time freelance digital designer.

Gal always had a vision of creating a project that was entirely her own. “I wanted to apply my knowledge and skills from working with brands,” she says. “This entire process has opened a new door for me as a designer – what else I can do? What else can I create as GALLYPANTZ? I feel I can do anything now that I’ve created this.”

The beauty of a GALLYPANTZ scarf: its unlimited versatility. One look at Gal’s Instagram and you’ll see her Lunchbox collection styled in different ways. You can wear the scarf in your hair, tie it around your neck like a bandana, attach it to your purse, pull it through a belt loop, wrap it around wine bottles and flowers… the list goes on.

“Usually, once I have my outfit ready, I notice that one of the scarves (sometimes even two) will work perfectly and balance my outfit,” she says. “It feels like adding icing to a cake, or adding that final decorative piece to a dish.”

The square-shaped, bandana-style scarves are made from a cotton silk blend, giving them an ultra-soft feel and lustrous finish, with the breathability of cotton. Gal says she spent time finding the right fabric – she wanted the scarf to feel comfortable against the skin but substantial enough to be used for all kinds of purposes.

Gal says seeing the ways her community personalise her scarves fills her with so much joy. “I’ve got goosebumps right now. It’s so beautiful to see it on others, it inspires me and I’m experimenting with the scarves every day.”

With each tie, wrap and wear, GALLYPANTZ’s scarves become part of a person’s day-to-day routine; a daily reminder to appreciate the small things.
