WORDS BY KATE STREADER

“I’m still into the same things I was when I was 16. I would just say there’s a little more skin and a taller boot involved.”

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years), so we’ve introduced a new series Hey, I Like Your Style!, diving into the fashion psyche of our favourite creatives. We’re talking the good, the bad and the 2007.

While the internet has made our fashion icons feel closer than ever before, even the most effortless of outfits came from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives and lives chronicled in 30-second clips just don’t tell the full story.

For more fashion news, shoots, articles and features, head to our Fashion section.

These are the stories behind the wardrobes, exploring how we develop our own personal style. There’s a brilliance behind the way we choose to express ourselves and at FJ, we know every outfit has a story.

This week, we’re exploring the style of singer and fashion designer Jesse Jo Stark. The brains behind Deadly Doll – a label specialising in pulp art emblazoned track pants, sweatshirts and baby tees – Jesse Jo’s style balances sneakers and sweats with micro skirts and thigh-high boots. Read on for her style journey.

Who are you and what do you like to wear?

Jesse Jo Stark. My skin.

What has your style evolution looked like? Do you feel like you’ve gained confidence in the way you dress?

I’ve always known what I liked. I’m still into the same things I was when I was 16. I would just say there’s a little more skin and a taller boot involved.

Personal style is a journey. Have you ever felt like you needed to fit into a particular fashion box?

Absolutely not. If anything, I try to go against the grain. I feel in this modern world, individuality is suffocated.

Take us back to those awkward teenage years. Do you have any fashion regrets?

I definitely have seen some questionable photos of myself online from when I was a teenager. I wouldn’t call them regrets but I do ask myself, ‘What the hell was I thinking?’. The first thing that comes to mind is brown moccasins.

What are the most expensive and least expensive items in your wardrobe?

The most valuable and cherished item would be my grandpa’s button-up shirt. And my least expensive item would be my plastic princess heart ring.

What is the most meaningful fashion piece you own?

A lot. Vintage monster masks for the band and Dilara Fındıkoğlu.

What fashion piece are you saving for right now?

Diamond fangs.

What are the wardrobe items you wear on repeat?
