WORDS BY IZZY WIGHT

“I want to continue to create pieces that inspire people to step out of the box.”

As fun as the comically tiny, Jacquemus-esque handbag moment was, my belongings are suffering. Stuffed into my jeans pockets, shoved in my top or clutched for hours at a time, my phone, wallet and obligatory lip product (I’m a gloss gal) need a more practical purse. And as we move away from teeny-tiny structured leather bags, I’m looking for something a little different.

Luckily, Naarm-based designer Emmanuelle Lee is creating exactly that. While undertaking her fashion degree at RMIT, Emmanuelle took an elective knitting class where she experimented with different yarns, weaves and textures. Drawn to the metallic lurex, she began crafting a collection of handbags based around the multidimensional thread.

Her label Im Me was launched in September with two (medium-sized) styles – the It Bag and the Ego Bag. The small-run range is available in a selection of party-girl shades like chrome, acid, ultramarine and absinthe. Below, Emmanuelle speaks on her debut collection.

My name is Emmanuelle, and I’m the founder of Im Me. I am originally from Boorloo (Perth) but now residing in Naarm (Melbourne). I moved over to study Fashion Design and Technology at RMIT and completed it in 2019. The course was very hands-on, and I was taught about all aspects of the industry, from pattern-making and garment construction to computer-aided design. In my first semester, I took an elective knitting class and fell in love. [I experimented] with coloured yarns, weaves and textures. I was especially drawn to the metallic yarns that ended up being the inspiration for this collection.

How did the label get started? Talk us through the process and the challenges.

The label started during the pandemic and was always going to revolve around accessories. The main goal was to create pieces anyone could wear to elevate an outfit. I want people who wear these bags to feel confident and sexy.

Where did the name come from?

Im Me, pronounced ‘I’m me’, represents individuality and identity. I believe we should all be able to express ourselves through clothing in whatever way we please. I love how we can truly show our personalities through the medium of fashion. I want to continue to create pieces that inspire people to step out of the box.

How would you describe Im Me to someone who’s never seen it before?

Im Me is inspired by the intricate art of crochet and knit with the added drama of metallic lurex. [I want wearers to feel] as extraordinary as the bag on their shoulder, as a display of individuality, creativity and identity.

What do you wish you knew when you started?

Something I am still learning is the skill of accounting and managing money, understanding that starting a small business in a creative industry doesn’t just involve designing and creating – [it] comes with financial responsibility. [It’s been] challenging to change my thought processes around money, but I appreciate how vital it is. I feel lucky to have people in my life who I can learn from and who support me.

Who do you think is most exciting in Australian fashion right now?

Sofia, the creator of Sabatucci, is killing the game at the moment. Her pieces are so unique and divine.

What about the Australian/NZ fashion industry needs to change?

I am inspired by how Australian and NZ brands are progressing and changing the game for sustainable design. One aspect that could improve is extending size ranges. Everyone should be able to have the same shopping experience, no matter what size… I think Dyspnea does an incredible job of offering inclusive sizing in beautifully constructed pieces.

Dream Australian/NZ collaborators?

My dream collab would be working with Flex Mami to create her own collection within Im Me. I love her creative vision and ability to thrive in multiple industries.

Go-to dinner party playlist?

My go-to song is always Good PusS (feat. CupcakKe) and obviously, Renaissance has been on repeat from the moment it came out.

Depop is my number one when sourcing unique pieces. I could spend hours searching on there. In terms of local brands, I am currently obsessed with Dirt, Suku Home, Sorrentino Studios, Oats and Sabi.

How can we buy one of your pieces?

You can purchase through my online store.
