WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE

“I am not very good at drawing or making art, so I feel like my wardrobe is a reflection of that desire for a creative outlet.”

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years), so we’ve introduced a new series Hey, I Like Your Style!, diving into the fashion psyche of our favourite creatives. We’re talking the good, the bad and the 2007.

While the internet has made our fashion icons feel closer than ever before, even the most effortless of outfits came from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives and lives chronicled in 30-second clips just don’t tell the full story.

These are the stories behind the wardrobes, exploring how we develop our own personal style. There’s a brilliance behind the way we choose to express ourselves and at FJ, we know every outfit has a story.

This week, we’re taking a look inside the wardrobe of Liana Rossi, the Head of Content for Mona. Known for her penchant for bold, colourful looks and fondness for accessories, Liana’s style is one-of-a-kind. Take a peek into her style evolution below.

Who are you and what do you like to wear?

Hi, I’m Liana! I live in Nipaluna/Hobart with my boyfriend Jackson and dog Kip. I love to accessorise – sunglasses, handbags, jewellery, belts, boots and all.

What has your style evolution looked like? Do you feel like you’ve gained confidence in the way you dress?

I’ve always loved to get dressed up, but I have definitely found more comfort and confidence in my late 20s to early 30s. Since I had a laparoscopy for my endometriosis, my body has changed a lot. I am trying to be kinder to it, while throwing caution to the wind and wearing whatever I want.

Some of the desire to dress up is genetic (I share lots of clothes with my mum when we’re in the same state, and my dad has a distinct style). I find getting dressed really fun most days – it’s like building a character. I am not very good at drawing or making art, so I feel like my wardrobe is a reflection of that desire for a creative outlet.

Personal style is a journey. Have you ever felt like you needed to fit into a particular fashion box?

I’ve lived in Nipaluna/Hobart since 2017. It’s a significant change in climate to Sydney and has had a big impact on the way I dress and what I have since invested in – I have an ever-growing collection of coats and boots because all my outfits were getting covered by puffer jackets.

It’s an interesting place to live and dress in. I’ve got a group of incredible friends – eccentric in their own ways – here who wear what works for them, and don’t bat an eyelid if I decide to wear a ballgown to dinner.

Take us back to those awkward teenage years. Do you have any fashion regrets?

No regrets. Not even my super-thin eyebrows or 20-inch weave. It was all fun at the time. In fact, I just bought a pair of baby pink LMS platforms which feel like something I would have worn 15 years ago, so I’m leaning into it again (within reason).

What is the most meaningful fashion piece you own?

Clothing is so sentimental to me and I generally categorise memories via what I was wearing which makes me quite the hoarder. There’s a Louis Vuitton pochette my parents bought for my 16th birthday; a necklace that belonged to my nonna which I had a jeweller make into a choker; my first Poppy Lissiman clutch circa 2014 when we first met, and everything she’s made since (very proud friend over here)… the list goes on and on and on.

What’s in your cart at the moment?

No clothing because we’re in the middle of renovating our house! I’ve got a cart full of homewares and am looking for dining chairs.

What fashion piece are you saving for right now?

Knee-high Balenciaga Essex boots in metallic purple, very subtle and practical.

What are the wardrobe items you wear on repeat?

At the moment I’m really into trench coats. I have a pale blue and hot pink silk trench from my lovely friend Michael Lo Sordo that I’ve been wearing for maybe seven years – in fact, all my Michael Lo Sordo jackets get a repeat run.
