Round of applause.

The 2017/2018 winners of the International Woolmark Prize have been announced, and boy, this year’s competition was tough.

British designer Matthew Miller took out the menswear prize, while India-based label Bodice was awarded the prize for womenswear. In addition, US label DYNE was announced the winner of the Innovation Award.

The awards were judged by a highly-esteemed panel of industry experts, based on the designer’s use of Australian merino wool.

Matthew Miller was awarded menswear winner for innovative designs that can adapt to different climates. He treated wool in a variety of ways, including the creation of a water-resistant fabric, while also using recycled materials for fastenings.

Designer Ruchika Sachdeva was praised for her technique and manufacturing process through her label Bodice. Inspired by her grandmother who used to upcycle saris into quilts, Sachdeva worked with handweavers and encouraged them to take an unorthodox approach to traditional sewing techniques.

DYNE’s Christopher Bevans was presented with the Innovation Award with his technical snowboarding collection, which included a waterproof wool jacket with in-built microchip to track users in an avalanche.

To give each designer an industry head start, Matthew Miller and Bodice will both receive $200,000 towards the development of their business. They’ll also receive Woolmark certification, mentorship and the opportunity to be stocked in some of the world’s most prestigious department stores. DYNE will also receive $100,000.

The Woolmark Company is the global authority on wool, and champions the use of Australian merino wool as the ultimate natural fibre.
