Luxe slipper label Monte lands in Melbourne

Words by Jasmine Wallis

Going brick-and-mortar.

Makers of luxe slippers (that our Managing Editor wears to work every day), Monte is going brick-and-mortar. The label has opened up its first physical store in the inner Melbourne suburb of Cremorne.

Some might say it’s a bold move in today’s retail climate, but it’s one co-founders Lib and Will Carter consider a logical next step.

“We’ve been so overwhelmed by the success of online,” says Lib. “We felt it was a natural progression to launch a retail offering.”

The idea is to use the space to better connect with Monte’s dedicated customer base. It comes off the back of a recent name change (the label was formerly known as Bertie), that has done little to shake brand loyalty.

When considering the niche Monte has carved for itself, however, it’s hardly surprising.

Designed in Australia using a soft premium velvet and leather sole, the slippers are ethically produced in five rich colours: Mulberry Red, Peacoat Navy, Jet Black, Powder Blue and Hunter Green.

The store has been styled to create a home-like environment that is cosy, classic and approachable — a lot like the slippers themselves.

Monte’s retail space can be found in Melbourne at 126 Cubitt Street, Cremorne, with the store open Monday to Saturday.
