“Natural fibres are your friend.”

While the Melbourne weather still feels like it’s hanging on to winter, it’s already November and summer is just around the corner. Boozy Sunday brunches and long road trips call for outfits that are comfortable and lightweight, but also make for the perfect candid photo.

But what are the staples? To provide us with some much-needed outfit inspiration, we asked two Melbourne fashion creatives what they’ll be wearing for an unpredictable, La Niña summer.

Below, content creator and programmer Savannah Anand-Sobti and model and curator Sabina McKenna have shared the outfits they’re planning to wear on repeat with the Y2K-inspired New Balance 9060s, to show you just how versatile its comfort-focused, retro-futuristic silhouette is.

What will you be wearing most this summer and why?

Wrap skirts, bows in my hair, fun sandals, ’lil cutie tops – as per usual – and small over-the-shoulder designer bags (manifesting this for me). I’m also loving Permanent Vacation’s new collection. The look of the shrug, matching top and kinda washed-out jeans.

What are your best tips for summer dressing?

Natural fibres are your friend. No synthetic tops unless you wanna be stinky – uh oh.

What are your summer essentials?

Comfy cute shoes for summer adventures, silky slip skirts for an easy go-to staple, I love a short-sleeved shirt over a small top to keep it breathable but sun-smart. I also love a little cotton cardi that you can squish into your bag in case it gets cool.

What are your favourite items to take you from the beach to a night out?

Gotta be the short-sleeved shirt again. I have quite a large collection.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

Not very original, but swimming at the beach. I guess it must be a pretty universal experience that swimming makes you forget your worries.

What will you be wearing most this summer and why?

I love a dress and a sun hat for summer, but I think I will be embracing bike shorts and a crop top – perhaps with a shirt over top! I have a lot of bralettes that I haven’t had a chance to wear, and I think a workout meets lunch date is the vibe for me this summer. Basically just hoping to keep things low-key but put together.

What are your best tips for summer dressing?

Honestly, I think I am better at winter dressing; I love layers and big jackets. So maybe my best tip for summer dressing is to wear sunscreen! I think wearing natural fibres is a good general tip, that way I can wear something that’s perhaps a bit more coverage –  like a longer dress or shirt – but it won’t be boiling! I also love a mini skirt, with a small top and an oversized shirt.

What are your summer essentials?

Sandals! I go through a pair of Suicoke a year. They’re so versatile, and I’m super picky with shoes so I tend to just wear the same things over and over.

What are your favourite items to take you from the beach to a night out?

Definitely a lightweight dress. I am thinking of my Ganni plaid dress (everyone knows the one). I can wear that with bathers underneath and sandals, then bring my makeup bag to scrub up after the beach and I’m good to go!

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

Dinners and late lunches! Just taking it easy and seeing where the day takes me. I am usually very structured and regimented, so it’s nice to actually relax over the holidays and not plan too much!
