This year, Melbourne Fashion Week has partnered with the independent tertiary education college, Collarts. A leader in fashion marketing, design and sustainability education, Collarts is giving attendees the chance to connect with industry insiders and emerging talent in meaningful ways.

Making Sustainable Statements Workshop
October 28, 10am to 1pm
The fashion industry’s push for a greener future means makers are constantly looking for ways to repurpose recycled textiles and material waste. In this workshop, held at Southbank’s Hanover House, you’ll get the opportunity to engage in a dynamic discussion about the environmental impacts of consumerism. Following this, you’ll use fashion ingenuity to transform bioplastics and other found materials into unique statement pieces. This will be a hands-on experience, inviting participants to challenge the traditional notions of fabrics and textiles.

Underground Runway
October 26, 8pm to 8.30pm and 9.30 to 10pm
This Y2K-inspired runway show will pay homage to the OTT glitz of 2000s. Merging performance, art and fashion, the Underground Runway will showcase some of the city’s most promising burgeoning talent. The show will feature a diverse lineup of independent Melbourne designers like Briar Will, Erik Yvon, Clothing the Gaps, Reborn by HoMie, Ka-He, Karlaidlaw, Maroske Peech, Sabatucci and more.

Sustainable Storytelling Workshop
October 28, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
If you’re a small business owner or up-and-coming designer, this one’s for you. The Sustainable Storytelling Workshop will help prospective fashion industry professionals address the unique challenges of creating and promoting a conscious fashion brand. Forget greenwashing – this ‘practical business bootcamp’ will equip you with effective, meaningful ways to communicate your sustainable practices. You’ll leave with tangible tools, including a nine-tile Instagram grid that can serve as a template for future messaging.

A New Approach to Textiles Workshop
October 27, 5.30pm to 7.30pm
Using examples from Collarts’ School of Design students, this talk will discuss innovative ways the fashion industry can use textiles, moving towards a more sustainable future. You’ll hear from fashion designers, educators, entrepreneurs and insiders, coming together to share knowledge and practical tips while addressing some of the most pressing issues facing the industry.
