From December 11 to April 16, attendees can expect to view over 110 fashion pieces plucked from different points of McQueen’s career. Sixty garments and accessories will travel from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), joining another 50 from the NGV’s archives.

These will be presented alongside 70 historical artworks spanning painting, sculpture, photography and decorative arts. The idea is to bring audiences closer to the designer’s creative process by showcasing his artistic influences, not simply tell a story of his life.

“The juxtaposition of garments and artworks highlights McQueen’s creative process and capacity for storytelling, as well as offering audiences an opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of his artistic legacy and the nature of inspiration,” an official NGV press release read.

Adding to the storytelling will be a series of recorded interviews, featuring friends and colleagues, as well as the creatives who orbited the designer throughout his career, like photographers, makeup artists and more.

Today’s announcement follows the resounding success of Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto, which saw more than 215,000 people through the doors of the NGV over summer. It was the Chanel exhibition’s international debut and an undeniable coup for the gallery, which seems to have set the precedent for future showcases.

Of course, McQueen’s work was visionary in an entirely different way. “He created a new vocabulary for fashion design that still resonates today,” notes NGV Director Tony Ellwood.

The exhibition has been in the works since 1996, when the NGV started collecting works from the designer himself. Alongside archival pieces, attendees will also have the opportunity to inspect toiles from the designer, giving further insight into the mind behind the genius.

The designer himself once said, “If you want to know me, just look at my work.” Come summer, we’ll have the opportunity to do just that.

Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse will be on display at Melbourne’s NGV International from December 11 to April 16. Tickets are $30 for an adult and already on sale here.
