Onitsuka Tiger’s new sneakers are the silver shoes of the season

As a child, I was captivated by light-up sneakers. To my young mind, they were the pinnacle of cool footwear innovations. A few decades later, I’m still equally transfixed by a fun statement shoe. 

It’s why, naturally, my interest was piqued by Onitsuka Tiger’s metallic sneakers. Over on TikTok, the fashion girlies have been coveting the footwear brand’s silver Mexico 66 sneakers, and for good reason. As the recent resurgence of metallic fashion has shown, a touch of silver can elevate any outfit.

Aside from silver’s obvious futuristic and cosmic connotations, from a purely visual perspective, it’s reflective and eye-catching, making it an alluring choice for those wishing to stand out. It’s also considered a neutral colour, making it versatile too.

And fashion’s love affair with the colour is showing no signs of slowing down. According to recent statistics, there have been over three million views and counting on TikTok for the hashtag #silveroutfit, with #metallicoutfit falling shortly behind.

The collection revitalises two iconic Onitsuka Tiger models, the Mexico 66 SD and Delecity shoes, with its Aurora lights-inspired prism colours. There’s a three-dimensional element to the Mexico 66 SD, with the entire upper coated in a reflective, responsive-to-light pattern. To ensure these sneakers can keep up with you, they’re fitted out with Onitsuka Tiger’s iconic Amplifoam heel wedge and rubber which provides superior grip.

The Delecity shoe is for those who aren’t afraid of standing out. The bold sneaker features an exaggerated sole (also sprayed with the unique prism-coloured finish) and the laces are embellished with Swarovski® crystals.
