Suku Home’s summer collection embodies the carefree energy we’re all ready to embrace

WORDS BY GITIKA GARG

“We have been indoors most of this year, so we are ready for a fun and playful summer and that’s what we’ve translated into the silhouettes in Utopia.”

After a very difficult year, a fun and playful summer is on the horizon, and Suku Home’s new Utopia collection perfectly captures the carefree spirit of the warmer months to come. Loved for its signature oversized and relaxed unisex pieces, the Melbourne-Indonesian label’s summer collection also features some more sleek, figure-hugging silhouettes.

Think delicate crocheted knits and midi dresses among its classic pyjamas styles, all created in vibrant pops of colour and soft pastels. Capturing the excitement of a long-awaited holiday, the label’s founder and designer Christine Lafian explains that this collection was actually inspired by a newfound sense of acceptance and contentment in the everyday.

“While designing for this collection, I thought a lot about my ideal summer. My mind then wandered to a heavier question of whether we would ever reach an ideal world, a utopia, with what’s going on in the world right now. I spent a lot of time pondering this question and found the answer in my repetitive routine.

“The joy that I found in being present and enjoying the mundane routines I once disliked gave me the inspiration for this collection. What you see is contentment in knowing that our ideal world starts inward… it starts at home,” she tells me.

Featuring hand-dyed, painted and sewn pieces, you can expect to see a playful sensitivity throughout its prints (something Suku does so well), combining bold gestural strokes with fluid movement.

“I found comfort in drawing curvy lines and repetitive dots, which you will see a lot in this range… We have been indoors most of this year, so we are ready for a fun and playful summer and that’s what we’ve translated into the silhouettes in Utopia.”

The range features lightweight bamboo and cotton pieces, sustainably created in her Bali based studio. Every garment is created by skilled artisans, who intertwine their own stories into their craft and work.

“My design process with every collection always starts with a colour palette – colour for me is the most important! I would ask myself and my team, what colour would you like to wear this summer? I love asking for feedback from my team because I trust their judgement and they all have amazing individual styles,” says Christine.

As with everything this year, the Utopia collection was brought to us by the delights of Zoom. “Not being able to travel to Bali… means that there were a lot of Zoom meetings, video calls, and WhatsApp chats between my team there and me to bring this range to life,” Christine explains.

As life slowly resumes and warmer weather creeps around the corner, she hopes for this collection to embody your ideal summer, whatever that might look like to you. “I want them to feel like if you feel good and look good, nothing else matters. It’s the first step to owning your day!”
