A week in work outfits with hairstylist, Madison Finn

A peek inside Madison’s working wardrobe.

It’s never easy trying to come up with new outfit combinations for the working week. Instead of having a set uniform, an ever-changing schedule means every morning requires a set of questions. Am I running around, or just sitting at my desk? Do I need to dress specifically for a project? And what am I meant to do when my favourite pants are in the wash?

Given that it can be a daily struggle, we’re asking our favourite local creatives for outfit inspiration. This week we’re digging through the bright and colourful wardrobe of Melbourne hairstylist, Madison Finn.

Having worked in the industry for over 16 years, Madison is known for her vibrant hair colours, unconventional cuts and “out there” styles. Her North Melbourne salon, Madison’s World, regularly attracts local creatives looking for something outside the box — an approach she also brings to getting dressed.

With an envy-worthy rotation of vintage designer and local labels in her wardrobe, Madison’s work style is often guided by her day. On days like Tuesday, when she’s on her feet from 10am to 7pm, comfort takes priority. On Fridays, when she’s only doing cuts and isn’t running the risk of getting hair colour on her outfit, she can pull out her favourite Wynn Hamlyn jeans and Gucci bag without risk. Read on to see how she gets dressed for a typical week.

Monday

Mondays are my office and VIP days, where I do one or two last-minute haircuts that are needed and get book work done. I’m wearing a leotard from Hara the Label (which I think they should definitely remake), with South Street swishy trackpants and a Nike windbreaker. I’m really into red at the moment!

It was sunny, so I happily paired this with some Melissa thong heels I got from my best friend’s shop, So Famillia in Sydney, and an old-school Lacoste bag from Swop to play on the sports theme I had going on.

Tuesday

Tuesday is a booked-out day at work, from 10am to 7pm, and I personally don’t take lunch breaks, so I want to be comfortable because I’m not stopping to fix my outfit!

Today we went with the old-school adidas and Gosha collaboration – it pops and is super easy to work in. My jeans are just chill, easy work jeans from Lioness, and then the Fenty x Reebok trainers to go with the bright vibe. My Acne bag added to these colours and called it a day!

Wednesday

It’s Wednesday morning and it’s sunny, so I went for a versatile outfit – comfy again but fun. We work 12.30pm to 9pm today, and I’m booked out. A classic staple that’s really comfortable for work is my Marine Serre moon top. I paired it with hot pink basketball shorts to go with the red and some high-knee open-toe boots from Nii Hai and a black Gucci bag again from Swop.

Last of all, I wore my Prada frames and a jacket from So Familia. It’s so warm and the leather and fur collar works so well with the rest of the outfit.

Thursday

On Thursday, I ran consultation training with my team before work, then we had a big day of colouring. I felt like doing a whole look for some reason, but needed it to be easy to work in for when the day got busy. The green top is American vintage – we had a sale at the store and I got it from a friend, Bridgie. The jeans are such a cool shape and you all know why… because they’re Karlaidlaw! I paired them with a pair of green Melissa X Y project heels.

Friday

This outfit is very relaxed but with lots of interest. I’ve been stealing this top from my boyfriend – I think he got it from that new vintage store Garmes on Smith Street. I wear his clothes when I know I’m not getting messy at work and can make sure they’re not going to get dirty.

On this day I had a lot of haircuts, then left early to pick up my daughter. The jeans are my staple sexy girl jeans from Wynn Hamlyn (tight in all the right places), and I paired them with some Nikes and a Gucci bag to add some class.
