What the ‘Fashion Journal’ team loved this month

October favourites.
It’s been a whirlwind month at Fashion Journal. Melbourne Fashion Week saw us reaching into the depths of our wardrobes to remember how to dress up again. Temperatures rose above 30 degrees, then did a classic 180, keeping us on our toes and more confused about what to wear than ever.
In bittersweet news, our dear features editor and resident bookworm, Daisy Henry, wrapped up at FJ this month for an exciting move to Sydney. Naturally, we sent her off with an FJ cover cake. Meanwhile, our managing editor Giulia has returned from maternity leave, and our incredible staff writer-slash-model Maryel is back on the tools.

Speaking of covers, we’ve also been deep in print deadline mode, with our next issue landing in November. Stay tuned. In the meantime, we have plenty of recommendations for you, from addictive reads and perfect spring pants to what might be the best chocolate tart in the city.

I’ve been getting back into the swing of reading lately and have motored through a fair few books, but one has proven rather sticky. Funnily enough, I didn’t love Fruit Fly at the time (the editor in me had a few gripes), but now I can’t get it out of my head. Plenty has been written about it online, so I won’t go into too much detail, but it follows a cast of terrible characters making terrible decisions. It’s the kind of book that leaves you feeling icky, frustrated and completely gripped.

I may be revealing a trade secret here, but the curator of Fashion Journal’s Sunday night meme dumps is the hilarious, beautiful and nice (triple threat!) Izzy Wight. She’s so multi-talented that, alongside her full-time job at Mecca, she also hosts a podcast called The Grill. Phew. It was recently picked up by ABC and I can’t get enough of it.
Wearing
I’ve worn (and written about) my first pair of E Nolan trousers about a million times and still, (eight?) years later they’re the first pair I reach for. Most recently I paired them with a Pave merino tank that I jazzed up by threading hoop earrings around the neckline. I tell everyone who will listen to get a pair.

Watching
Love is Blind is my guilty pleasure. My partner and I binge every season, then stay up late psychoanalysing the couples and reading each other the juiciest Reddit posts about whoever we dislike the most. It’s a bit self-indulgent, but we really enjoy feeling like a superior couple. Like, “Damn, we might have our moments but at least you never had a parking lot rendezvous while I tracked your phone location.”

The Norah pants by With Jean in black have made many appearances this month, probably more than is acceptable. I love that they’re one-size-fits-all, and they’re super easy to style depending on the top and shoes I wear (but I’m almost always wearing my Vibram FiveFingers, so I guess that’s two things I’ve been wearing this month).
Reading
As a university tutor, most of my reading over the last month has involved prepping for class and marking assignments. I have, however, also been making my way through the many cookbooks I’ve collected over the last few years. That counts as reading, right? My favourite recipe of late is a Japanese-Italian-fusion dumpling soup from Alan Rosenthal’s Foolproof Veggie One Pot. So yum!
Drinking
My sweet tooth will be my downfall, but my efforts to be healthy-ish persist. While the weather’s still cold, I’ve been curbing my sugar cravings with Teeccino’s Maca Chocolate Roasted tea, a teaspoon of honey and a big splash of oat milk. It doesn’t quite hit the same as the chocolate mint cake from Mietta by Rosemary, but it’s a more reasonable everyday treat.

Reading
We’re in the middle of print deadline, so I really haven’t read anything except for the articles you’re about to see in our new issue. Over and over and over again. It’s out in mid-November, and it’s going to be a goodie.

A lot of The Strokes’ latest album and Fontaines D.C. on repeat lately. Also randomly, Mac DeMarco throwbacks. Not enough pop girlies in the ears for my liking…

Every fashion week I loan a few outfits from local designers who are kind enough to let me galavant around the city in their beautiful clothing. I usually buy a few of my favourite pieces at the end, and this year that meant the Audrey Rosette bustier and Clare Bias skirt in black polka-dot from Sister Studio, as well as the stunning silk Vesper top by Jess Grindell. They’re all are versatile, fun, summery pieces that my wardrobe needed.
Watching
I’ve been bingeing the new season of Nobody Wants This and, consequently, getting served a lot of early 2000s Adam Brody content on Instagram. I’m not complaining.

I’ve had my eye on these Olivia Rowan Harem pants for a while now. They looked cozy but still elevated enough to dress up. I finally bit the bullet and bought a pair in khaki, which is an unexpected colourful choice for me. Something about khaki has been calling my name lately.
Eating

My partner and I both celebrated birthdays recently, which made for a big month for eating out. I took him to Cumulus Inc., a restaurant I’d been wanting to try for ages, and I wish we’d gone sooner. Every dish we ordered, from the mussels and tartare to the steak, was top-notch. If you visit, make sure you save room for dessert because the chocolate tart was absolute heaven.
Watching
I told a friend the other week that I absolutely love sitcoms, but when I revealed I’d never watched Friends, he was shocked I could make such a claim. So, I’ve slowly been making my way through the series, and so far, it’s been fun. Aside from the storylines, I can’t help but admire Rachel and Monica’s wardrobes.

It’s been a busy October, so I sadly haven’t read a book this month but I did pop into my local bookstore to pick up The Good Witch by Lucianne Tonti. I guess you’ll have to check back for the November roundup to hear my thoughts…
