A week in work outfits with Melbourne graphic designer and content producer Shan Kerr

WORDS BY DAISY HENRY
“Being tempted by the many op shops around Collingwood is definitely one of the downfalls of working in such a trendy area.”
Working in a creative role, it can be difficult to know how to dress for the day. Instead of having a set uniform of crisp white shirts and tailored black pants (as much as I love both), an ever-changing schedule means every morning requires a set of questions. Am I running around, or just sitting at my desk? Do I need to dress specifically for a project? And most importantly, will I be in the background of someone’s TikTok?

This week, graphic designer and content producer, Shan Kerr steps us through her working wardrobe. A typical week for Shan involves being on set for various creative shoots, capturing content and working on different design projects, as well as modelling for her own social media. With her office located in the heart of Collingwood and Fitzroy, Shan often finds herself window-shopping and looking to people on the streets for sartorial inspiration.
Aside from portraiture and sketching in her downtime, Shan loves the creativity that comes from experimenting with silhouettes and finding new ways to style different pieces. To keep up with her busy schedule, she mastered the art of blending fun and comfort in her everyday outfits.
Monday
I usually work from home on Mondays but find I’m most productive when I get out of the house and start my week on the right foot. I’m in the routine of getting to a cafe around 7:30am to do some drawing before I start work at 8:30am. Today I decided to head to one of my favourite cafes, ACoffee, with my sister Amber to grab a matcha before work.
I wore a Comme des Garçons T-shirt that I picked up from Top Floor Gallery, one of my favourite vintage designer stores in Melbourne. I paired it with my comfiest low-rise denim jeans from the Australian label Love and Nostalgia and my new Adidas Hamburgs in this awesome cobalt colourway.
Tuesday
A regular day in the office. I started the morning off with some drawing at Terror Twilight, which is right next to our work studio. I found this cute black mesh top (that turned out to be swimwear) at the op shop for three dollars and layered it over a plain black bralette and my favourite jeans.
It’s finally warm enough to wear slides in Melbourne, so I opted for my favourite black Seichi slides that I thrifted from Swop. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with layering my clothes and jewellery, and I loved how simple but classy this outfit looked.
Wednesday
I impulse-bought this gorgeous baby pink mohair Acne Studios knit from Swop on my way home from work yesterday. Being tempted by the many op shops around Collingwood is definitely one of the downfalls of working in such a trendy area. My favourite song came on in the changing rooms while I was trying it on and I took it as a sign from the fashion gods.
I paired it with a lace skirt I bought while travelling in Croatia last year and some Zara knee-high cowboy boots that I bought off Facebook marketplace. As always, I started my day with some drawing at Cibi, the cutest Japanese cafe and then got stuck into a big day of retouching and social media scheduling.
Thursday
Today was my first time being a solo producer on a shoot! I was a tad nervous running the day but everything went smoothly and it was actually a lot of fun. We were shooting for a tech brand in a beautiful Airbnb in East Melbourne. I wanted to be comfy and casual so I wore my favourite jeans again with an oversized denim shirt from Nobody Denim.
I added my blue Adidas and gold jewellery for an extra pop of colour and bling. Something you may have noticed about me is that when it comes to outfits, I am a repeat offender. I probably wear these jeans at least three times a week because they can do no wrong!
Friday
We made it to Friday! This week was a huge week of shoots, hitting deadlines and pumping the creative juices hard. Again, comfort came first and I decided to wear this gorgeous black set from Australian designer Isabelle Quinn. All black outfits are my fall-back plan when I wake up too late and don’t have the brain power to conjure up a cool outfit – they are minimal fuss and just work so well every time. I paired the set with some black ballet flats and some chunky gold jewellery from Cendré Co.
