A week in work outfits with Australian producer and Depop seller, Lillian Scott

WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE

“As we were crossing the road a group of girls yelled out of their car that they LOVED my outfit. If that’s not a professional flex I don’t know what is.”

Working in a creative role, it can be difficult to know how to dress for the day. Instead of having a set uniform of crisp white shirts and tailored black pants (as much as I love both), an ever-changing schedule means every morning requires a set of questions. Am I running around, or just sitting at my desk? Do I need to dress specifically for a project? And most importantly, will I be in the background of someone’s TikTok?

This week Lillian Scott, an Australian producer and Depop seller, takes us through a week in her busy life. With a hybrid work week that sees her trekking between her home studio and an office in Sydney, Lillian favours colour and oversized silhouettes and peppers her eye-catching outfits with bold, eccentric pieces.

Working among premium secondhand fashion means she’s amassed an envy-inducing array of pieces (the striped jumper from Copenhagen and the iconic Miss Sixty jeans she wore this week are personal favourites). Read on to see what garments she gravitated to.

Monday

I usually get to my studio around 6.00am to shoot Depop and collect sold items from the previous week. On my way home I’ll drop past Officeworks to print my shipping labels and pick up a coffee. The outfit I wear while I take part in these activities is always verging on insane. Often it’s half PJs/half activewear and I am never wearing underpants.

I work from home on Mondays (rejoice) so at 9am the real day begins and as such I must dress as a real person! I usually shower quickly and put on something comfy but cute. My ‘desk’ (dining table) is right next to a huge mirror so I’m looking at myself all day. The pressure is high! This particular Monday look is a combination of some of my wardrobe favourites. My Collina Strada x Melissa sandals (which still give me blisters if I walk for longer than five minutes even though I have had them for over a year).

My Double Rainbouu Logo Print Party Pants that I was gifted when working their sample sale. I wear these in a size large so they are super comfy, even sitting at a desk all day! I apologise in advance. I do not know the brand of the jumper. I found it at a loppemarked in Copenhagen (probably for like $10) and it doesn’t have a label on it! The bag is also unbranded and is my bag for the week (I change handbags weekly so that everyone gets a turn) so you will see this again later. On Monday evenings I play netball in North Sydney so around 6pm I put on my sleekest activewear and run through the city and across the bridge to my game.

Tuesday

My three ‘in office’ days start off mostly the same. Up at 4.30am – Depop admin, core workout, run, yoga (at Humming Puppy… yes this is a recommendation), home to shower and control my hair/face/soul then I walk to work (which is a fast-paced 40 mins). It is a surprise to no one (other than me most days) that I arrive dripping in sweat.

I love walking to work, is often one of my favourite parts of my day. The other day it poured with rain and I turned up my music, put my hands in the air and pretended I was at a music festival. It does however limit my outfit options as I have to wear appropriate footwear AND be comfortable enough to walk for 40 minutes (I wore a mini skirt yesterday – it was gorgini vintage Ralph Lauren – and spent the whole walk pulling it out from under my backpack. It was insufferable).

On Monday my new Karlaidlaw tracksuit arrived and although it was definitely not the season (I will be taking her to the snow in Jan) I had to wear it!I packed the pants in my backpack (noting their length) and wore a pair of shorts for the walk and got changed at the office. I love wearing a tracksuit to work because it’s cosy as hell but as it’s a tracksuit it’s matching and somewhat together, emphasis on somewhat. I am very grateful I don’t work in finance.

Wednesday

After visiting RTTS.land in Haymarket and impulse purchasing this Club Innocent dress, I had no choice but to wear it three times in a row. Thank god it is so easy to style. I had a photoshoot on Monday, a fashion show on Tuesday and on Wednesday I woke up and wanted to wear it again.

We had a team strategy day and I needed to bring in a giant whiteboard. Devastatingly this meant I had to get the bus. I took the opportunity to spend the day in inappropriate footwear which I guess was a silver lining. I loved wearing this look to the office and it made me sad that I hike every morning instead of dressing like a princess. We went out for lunch as a team and as we were crossing the road a group of girls yelled out of their car that they LOVED my outfit. If that’s not a professional flex I don’t know what is.

The boots I bought at Second Life Markets for $40, they are Zara. The green dress I made myself out of an old bed sheet. It’s quite sheer but is perfect for layering. The crochet dress is Club Innocent bought at RTTS.land.The bag is vintage Oroton. The hair is unwashed!

Thursday

By Thursday I am usually very, very tired and as a result, I often pull off my most unhinged look of the week. Dirty hair almost always. This week, however, I had my birthday dinner after work (!!) so I had to ensure I was glittery. I took the brief literally and decided to wear all metallics!I was sent this incredible blue metallic Ganni blazer a few weeks ago and had been so excited to wear it.

It was the centrepiece of the look (as it deserves). Take note of the appropriate footwear (which I like to think looked very Copenhagen girlie rather than over-70s walking group). They are vintage New Balance. Alas, the inappropriate pants created their own tropical microclimate during my walk and left me feeling slightly damp all day and night. Said pants were thrifted (and tailored to fit me properly) but originally from Asos. The bag is my bag of the week, as aforementioned.

Friday

Friday, another work-from-home day, starts at the studio where I shoot Depop and do other Depop-related things. I try and run/yoga before I get to the studio so I’m usually up by 4am. At this point in the week I do start to look quite worrisome due to lack of sleep so today I tried to mix it up with some fun hair to distract from this! These jeans are an absolute nightmare. For context, see below.

Storytime: I found these Miss Sixty jeans at Fashion Thrift Society but they were so small they wouldn’t go over my knee (this is no exaggeration). I was in love so instead of looking around the rest of the market, I spent the next hour scouring on the internet for another pair in my size. I was successful (obviously) and found a pair labelled size 10/12 from London. They were an UNHOLY amount of money and I bought them straight away.

Surprise, surprise they arrived a week later and were way too small – these jeans would fit a size six to eight or someone who doesn’t have flesh above their knees. The torturous part is they do up on me. I can wear them. They are just deathly uncomfortable.Anyway. I am wanting to take them overseas with me so when I am at home I have been forcing myself to wear them with the hope that they might stretch.

So far nothing has happened, I’ve just spent several days losing the blood flow in my legs. But if I’m mildly sedated and wear an oversized tee (as pictured) they look fire as fuck. So uh yeah, I’ll still be wearing them.I was going to So Familia after work and Kara took this pic for me outside her store. The jeans are vintage Miss Sixty, The jersey is vintage from Antigua (and also something I wore for most of 2017/2018), the sneakers are Balenciaga and the bag is a dupe of something from Thailand.
