WORDS BY IZZY WIGHT

Ideas for even the notoriously hard-to-please dads.

Dads are notoriously some of the hardest people to shop for. Unlike mums, there are rarely wishlists or thinly veiled hints to point you in the right direction. While father figures deserve to be pampered all the same, it’s often difficult to choose a meaningful gift for the man who’s perfectly content with socks and jocks.

This Father’s Day is an opportunity to give them something special – because the best presents are the ones you don’t expect, right? Below, the Fashion Journal team shares a curated list of gifts for all kinds of paternal figures. Scroll on for books, skincare, sweet treats and more.

Mr Simple Linen Long-Sleeve Shirt in Navy

While I love my dad’s rotating wardrobe of high-vis work uniforms, flannelette shirts and novelty tees (which I really do, he’s the cutest), sometimes he finds it difficult to dress for the in-between seasons. With spring coming up, I think this navy linen long-sleeve from Mr Simple will be a welcome addition to his closet. Plus, he can leave it open and still show off his ‘I don’t snore, I dream I’m a motorcycle’ T-shirt underneath.

This book is my dad’s favourite. I love gifting books as there’s something really personal about them. His own copy is pretty well-loved, and I thought we could add another edition to his collection. I’m also yet to read this novel, so now’s the chance to ‘borrow’ it too!

Koko Black x Four Pillars Gin Collection 16pc Gift Box*

Picked by: Georgina, Fashion Journal‘s Partnerships and Campaign Coordinator

If you’re an avid reader of Fashion Journal, you know we love to champion and support local labels. This year, as the ultimate Father’s Day treat, I’m gifting my dad the collab from two iconic Australian brands, Koko Black and Four Pillars. Koko Black has created four new pralines inspired by some of Four Pillars’ most popular gins, packaged up in a gift box of 16 pralines. If you’d like to gift any of your father figures an additional treat, make them one of the four bespoke cocktails inspired by the Koko Black pralines, with recipes included in the Gin Collections gift box.

HoMie Crew 2.0 in White Marle

Picked by: Ella, Fashion Journal‘s Partnerships and Campaign Manager

Like a lot of dads I know, mine seems to have an aversion to buying new clothes. You best believe he still wears his faded yellow Rip Curl hoodie from 2010 like it’s new season Gucci. As an outdoorsy parent (he’s a newly converted MAMIL) I know he’ll appreciate a Father’s Day gift he’ll actually wear. Since its inception in 2015, not-for-profit Melbourne label HoMie has been elevating the local streetwear scene while simultaneously supporting young people affected by homelessness and hardship. I’ve got my eye on this white marle crew neck to give Dad the wardrobe refresh he deserves.

If you didn’t catch it already, my dad is absolutely motorbike crazy. His father drove his mother to the hospital on a Yamaha, with her having contractions in the sidecar – so the obsession runs deep. For the ultimate present, I’m gifting my dad a ticket to the Phillip Island MotoGP in October. He’s very much an experiential gift kind of guy, and a day spent watching bikes speed by in the grandstands will be something neither of us will forget.

Made By Fressko Gift Card*

Picked by: Georgina, Fashion Journal‘s Partnerships and Campaign Coordinator

Like most of our fathers, my dad is impossible to buy for. It’s at the point where he orders his own gifts and uses them up until the holiday, then gives them to us to wrap and then return to him on the day. He’s been stealing my Made By Fressko drinkware to take to work or the golf course for years, so this Father’s Day I’m taking some initiative and getting him a gift card from the brand. Its award-winning reusable premium drinkware is something I know he’ll both love and use.

The Zhous are a practical household. Presents are usually items that can be used – and this year’s Father’s Day present is no different. My dad actually requested this to be his gift (we aren’t a household of surprises). This Ginger Scalp Care Shampoo from The Body Shop is an all-time favourite of his; I’ve purchased it a handful of times for him come birthday or festive event. It’s a soothing shampoo for dry, flaky scalp – and since a year ago, it’s now vegan.

If you live in Australia (even more so in Melbourne), there’s a high chance your dad is a bit of a coffee aficionado. Whether he’s a piccolo or a decaf drinker, Melbourne-based roasters Industry Beans have you covered. As we head into warmer weather it’s hard to look past its locally-roasted Cold Brew Concentrate, crafted from a unique three-bean blend from the likes of Brazil, Honduras and Papua New Guinea. A great base for iced coffee or cocktails, it’s the perfect liquid companion for all hours.
