Gift ideas for Mother’s Day, according to the FJ team

WORDS BY FASHION JOURNAL

Because we all know they’re the hardest people to buy for.

Gift buying is a bit of an art. If you’re like me and gift-giving is your love language, you probably spend a lot of time (far too long) mulling over what you’re going to buy your nearest and dearest. There really isn’t anything quite like absolutely nailing a present, but some people are particularly hard to buy for. At the absolute top of this category are mums – or whoever plays a mother-like role in your life – primarily because they almost always insist they “Don’t need anything at all, love!”.

But we all know that they really do deserve something especially lovely, and Mother’s Day is a chance to treat them to that item they secretly want but would never dare tell you they do. If you’re stuck for ideas, below the Fashion Journal editorial team has shared what we’ll be gifting our mums this Mother’s Day.

Maison Margiela By the Fireplace Candle

Picked by: Cait, Fashion Journal’s Editor

I’ve worn Maison Margiela’s By the Fireplace perfume for the last few years, and my mum always mentions how much she likes it. She’s not that much of a perfume wearer herself though, but she does love a good candle, so the candle version of this scent will be right up her alley.

Hommey Willow Slippers in Olive

My mum loves a pair of slippers. As with many Chinese households, we don’t wear shoes in the house, so our little toes are usually covered by slippers. Naturally, they become well-worn pretty quickly. These slippers from Hommey look ultra comfy and stylish.

I’ve been eyeing the LA label DedCool for a couple of years now – its branding is super slick and playful, and I love that it prioritises genderless scents and organic extracts. It recently landed in Australia and I finally got to smell what the hype was all about. Mum and I had a field day trialling the different fragrances. She settled on Xtra Milk and Smiley Face Garden as her favourites.

Mejuri Bold Huggie Hoops*

My mum and I share a similar style and are constantly sharing new brands and products with each other. We’ve been long-time fans of Mejuri‘s high-quality everyday jewellery and discovered the Toronto-based label while living in the Canadian city several years ago. I’ve been wearing the yellow 14K gold Bold Huggie Hoops every day for about a year now and she’s eyed them off continuously, so I would love to gift her a set in her signature white gold. To get them in time for Mother’s Day, order before May 4, 10pm AEDT.

A bunch of native blooms is a bit of a Mother’s Day tradition in our house, and this year is no exception. While I’d normally opt for a Melbourne-based favourite like Xxflos or Bush, Mum lives in Queensland, so I’ll be using Australia-wide delivery service Lvly. The packaging is special (I know she loves a reusable glass jar moment) and the arrangements are affordable, with tiered pricing to suit every budget. She’ll love the Native Posy bunch.

Bared Footwear Caracara Cloud MIRUM Plant-Based Material Sneakers*

My mum, unfortunately, broke her ankle a couple of years ago, so now she prioritises footwear that not only looks good but is supportive and comfortable. I can’t stress how much she loves Bared for the support its footwear gives, and how much she has convinced all of her friends to get on board. She’s been looking for some sleek and versatile sneakers to wear, and its Caracara Cloud MIRUM Plant-Based Material Sneakers are definitely on her radar. The shoes feature the iconic Bared footbed that provides the support she knows and loves. Most importantly, these sneakers are the first on the market to use MIRUM as a leather alternative, making the upper part of the shoe plastic-free and durable and raising the bar for sustainable footwear.

For my dear friend who is a new mum and celebrating her first Mother’s Day this year, I would love to gift her something that will free up some time in her increasingly busy days. Remi Beauty’s solid moisturisers take a four-in-one approach to hydrating skincare, championing sustainability both with its packaging-free approach and its all-encompassing formula. Not only will its products free up time in my friend’s routine, but they’re good for the planet too.

Sans Beast Universo Tote in Forest*

Picked by: Ella, Fashion Journal’s Partnerships and Campaign Manager

Growing up, I always marvelled at my mum’s ability to juggle 10 tasks at once. Between full-time work and the demands of raising two ratbag children, her love was always unwavering. As someone who’s always on the go, I know she’d love an upgrade to her trusty carry-all bag. This tote from Sans Beast has everything she could need, including multiple pockets and handles, with a sleek, modern look, perfect for keeping her looking sharp even when she’s got her hands full. With any Mother’s Day purchase over $299, receive a complementary Poppet Phone Sling, an ideal gift for mum or to keep for yourself.

Raaie Sun Milk Drops

I’m a huge fan of New Zealand skincare brand Raaie (I raved about how its product transformed my acne-prone skin here). The brand’s science-backed botanical skincare is worth every penny, and I particularly like that the bottles are refillable. I was recently sent its new SPF50+ Sun Milk Drops, and it’s quickly become my go-to daily sunblock. The formula is lightweight and the soft peach tint gives the skin an even glow. As a sun-conscious person who also cares about the environment, I know my mum will be as taken with this product as I am.

De Bortoli Rosé Rosé Gift Set*

Picked by: Ella, Fashion Journal’s Partnerships and Campaign Manager

A post shared by De Bortoli Wines (@debortoliwines)

My mum is one of those people that claim they never want a gift and that the love and affection of her children is the greatest gift of all. For those in the same boat, this boozy gift set from De Bortoli is a failsafe for even the most contented mum (and those with an affinity for a great dry rosé). Not only is the packaging beautiful, but I love the idea of indulging in a glass together on the day as a way of expressing our love.

Complete with six bottles of De Bortoli’s finest rosé, there’s very little margin for error. Better yet, De Bortoli has created a 30 per cent discount code for this gift pack, exclusively for FJ readers. The discount is applicable from April 28 until May 21 2023, all you need to do is enter FJ30RR at the checkout.

Maison Balzac Josephine Vase Duo

Picked by: Izzy, Fashion Journal‘s Editorial Assistant

A post shared by MAISON BALZAC (@maisonbalzac)

This duo of hand-blown glass vases are the perfect vessels for Mum’s fresh bunch of flowers. For less than $100, two vases mean she can place one on the dining table and keep one as a bedroom refresher. The azure colour is a particular selling point, as she’s completely mad about Spode’s Blue Italian china range. You have to appreciate a cohesive aesthetic, right?

When it comes to gifting, I always appreciate a nice set of pyjamas, and like mother, like daughter. There’s something so pleasing about ending a long day by climbing into a matching set of PJs for a long night of beauty sleep. Founded by a mother-daughter duo, Australian label Piyama has so many patterns and styles to choose from, which means there’s a pair for every mum. It also has new styles launching this week, just in time for Mother’s Day.

My cousin is a new mum, and the kind of person who appreciates a thoughtful gift. For her first-ever Mother’s Day, I want to spoil her with something a little more sophisticated than a candle or a card, and it’s no secret that Australian label Westhill has mastered the art of creating classic and timeless jewellery. Hosting a range of elegant sterling silver and solid gold pieces, the brand has recently upgraded its personalisation options, offering a choice of two engraving styles for signet rings like this one, as well as an option to include a personalised message on the inside.

Emma Lewisham Supernatural Face Creme Riche

I had an Emma Lewisham parcel arrive at my door the other day and when my mum spotted its signature purple and pink packaging, she instantly exclaimed, “Oh, that’s the really good brand.” By extension of my work in media, my mum has been lucky enough to roadtest a few beauty brands. A standout favourite is Emma Lewisham. Her vial of face cream recently ran out and she’s keen on a fresh batch.
