Bye Felicia, Instagram has launched an option to automatically block inappropriate comments

Now available to us normies.

A right previously reserved for the Taylors and the Kanyes of the world, Instagram’s newest function is now allowing us non-famous users to request inappropriate comments be blocked on our accounts. 

Instagram today announced the new comment filtering feature. Once turned on, it will automatically hide unwanted comments left by the haters and trolls of the world.

Once the keyboard tool is activated, both new and existing comments featuring Insta-deemed ‘inappropriate words’ will be hidden from you and your followers, with only the person who left the comment able to view it. 

To make use of this new feature, tap the gear icon on the top right corner of your profile. Next, tap ‘comments’ and then turn on ‘use default list of keywords’. If there are any particular words or phrases you’d like to filter, you can add these to ‘custom keywords’.

The feature is now available globally.

However, there are some limitations. The ‘default’ keywords are only in English, containing the most commonly used ‘inappropriate’ and ‘offensive’ words on Instagram. The ‘custom’ keywords also exclude languages that don’t have spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai. 

While Instagram has made leaps to ensure a safer environment on the social media app, it appears more needs to be done to make this a global movement.
