Street Snaps: Grey Gardens opens in Melbourne

Grey Gardens is making winter a whole lot better for those still here battling it out. After a booming opening night, last Friday marked the official opening of Melbourne’s newest mixed-use project space to the public.
It also marks the first permanent home for the formerly perma-travelling Speakeasy Cinema, which was always supposed to be so much more than just a room with a cinema screen.
Grey Gardens invites artists, curators and event-makers to bring the space between a black box and a white cube to life, with all kinds of creativity accepted and encouraged.
So the July lineup is already looking amazing and it goes a little like this. A reprise of Marina Abramović: The Artist is present, The Australian of lo-fi new-age sci-fi For the Plasma and the launch of Speakeasy kid’s cinema.
And it doesn’t stop there, Speakeasy will also feature re-score producers Hear My Eyes to bring you Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Palme d’Or winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, which includes a live, improvised recount by Melbourne hip hop jazz musicians 30/70.
New work from Melbourne’s long-form poet Magic Steven is also set to exhibit, as well the colourful works from audio-video artist Xanthe Dobbie.
Don’t forget about the Coffee bar + Larder. The short menu finds mindful, healthy and organic eating its focus, with a ‘Little Edie’ bespoke buckwheat granola courtesy of The Staple Store, home-made broths, a selection of smørrebrøds (open sandwiches), pressed juices, deliciously good cinema snacks and a monthly rotation of Melbourne’s best beans as chosen by Three Thousand Thieves. Lunchboxes and dinner smorgasbords will also be on offer during Speakeasy Cinema sessions and various Grey Gardens events.
