WORDS BY FASHION JOURNAL

From cosy reads to curtain calls.

Between the freezing temperatures and relentless rain, we’ve had plenty of time lately to spend tucked indoors. Luckily, we have managed to stay entertained, whether that be by hitting the couch and getting lost in Euphoria discourse or rewatching our old favourites.

Interested to hear how others navigate the world? Head to our Life section.

We’ve also started making our way through our winter reading lists, with modern classics like Patti Smith’s cosy New York reflections in M Train and fantasy novels like Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing. Find our essentials for romanticising winter below.

A post shared by Trent Dalton (@trentdaltonauthor)

I know I’m late to this one, but I’ve been reading Lola in the Mirror by Trent Dalton and it’s so worth the hype. It’s beautifully written and each page leaves me in awe. I know it’s going to become an all-time favourite of mine. I’m already sad I’ll never be able to read it for the first time again.

Watching

For me winter is a time for rewatching my favourites. This month I’ve treated myself to a rewatch of my all-time favourite sitcom, Arrested Development. To me it’s perfection (up until season four). It has been the perfect cure to laugh away my winter blues.

Reading

I’ve been on a Patti Smith kick lately and let me say, there’s no better way to embrace winter than reading about her setting up shop at her favourite New York cafe drinking endless cups of coffee. Next on my reading list is Men in the Sun, a collection of stories by Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani.

I was also lucky enough to see Prima Facie at the Comedy Theatre last weekend and it was incredible. I definitely want to catch more stage shows this winter!

Reading

I’ve gone back to Deborah Levy’s fiction, picking up August Blue, which was published a few years ago. Set during the pandemic, it follows a former child protégé concert pianist in the midst of an identity crisis. It’s partly set in a Greek summer, making it perfect winter escapism.

A post shared by euphoria (@euphoria)

Love it or hate it, I still think Euphoria is one of the most exciting and original shows on right now. The weekly screenings my housemate and I have been doing are genuinely getting us through winter.

Mostly, we spend the entire time dissecting how ridiculous this season is (must everyone be a sex worker? What is the point of Nate Jacobs? Why is Sam Levinson so hell-bent on humiliating Cassie?), but there are also moments where I love the extremity of it all: the Tarantino-esque violence, Alamo’s cowboy-pimp side-plot episode, Rosalia’s makeup, Alexa Demi’s wardrobe. I’m going to be sad when it’s over.

A post shared by Lena Dunham (@lenadunham)

Along with the rest of the world I have just finished reading Lena Dunham’s new memoir, Famesick. I devoured it in about three rainy days spent at home and loved every second. Lena’s story is so personal, yet parts of her experience are shockingly relatable at the same time.

Watching

Considering my most recent read, I think it’s only natural that I’m rewatching Girls again. It hits every time, it’s my all-time favourite comfort show. Aside from that, I’ve just started to explore the Yellowstone universe, beginning with the first prequel, 1883, which might be a weird approach but I need all the context.

Reading

Every year, I feel less motivated to leave my house during the colder months. So, to somehow get a fix for some excitement and adventure, I’ve been reading Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing. I love a fantasy novel, and I love one with a dangerously captivating romance storyline even more.

A post shared by Her Majesty’s Theatre (@hmt_melb)

Lately, I’ve spent more time than I’d like to admit tucked under a blanket by the fire, rewatching Modern Family. It’s my ultimate comfort show, and every episode seems to show me a joke I missed before. But to get me out into Melbourne’s unforgiving winter, my friends have gifted me tickets to see Dracula at Her Majesty’s Theatre which I couldn’t be more excited for.
