End of an era?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, The 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show featured its lowest ratings yet – despite performances from Rita Ora, Halsey and Bebe Rexha.
According to data published by Nielsen, this year’s show attracted 3.3 million viewers, a drop from 2017’s 5 million. Various factors have been blamed for the show’s ongoing dive in popularity.
First of all, Ed Razek, the chief marketing officer of L Brands (Victoria’s Secret’s parent company) was slammed for making transphobic comments in an interview with Vogue.
Next, the show switched networks from CBS to ABC, airing on a Sunday night instead of the regular Tuesday evening.
And lastly, it seems watching a cast of skinny models make their way down a runway in scantily-clad designs isn’t as appealing as it used to be. In the lead-up to the show, numerous opinion pieces slammed the runway for its misogynistic approach – and how it doesn’t belong in the era of #MeToo.
Does the Victoria’s Secret show have a place in 2019? We’ll let you decide.
