Shield the sun.

Bid your sunnies goodbye, transition contact lenses are officially a thing.

The American Food and Drug Administration just approved Johnson & Johnson Vision contact lenses containing a photochromic additive which darkens in the sun.

Once inside the contacts will fade back to clear, much like the transition lenses your parents have been repping since the ’90s.

Despite the functionality of the contacts, it’s not yet clear whether they’ll actually protect your eyes from UV light, meaning wearers might still need to opt for polarised sunnies to properly slip, slop, slap, slide.

If you’re picturing black, soulless peepers à la demon-chic, vice president of Johnson & Johnson Vision, Donna Lorenson, has ensured that’s not the case. “There’s not going to be any creepy alien eyes,” she told Buzzfeed News.

The contact lenses won’t be available until early next year. Until then, your prescription bands will just have to suffice.
