The Italian government is giving away free castles to people under 40

Here’s how to apply.

If the Australian property market is getting you down (will we ever be able to buy?), you might want to consider heading abroad.

The Italian government is implementing a new program that will gift young people (under 40) leases to more than 100 historic buildings.

Yep, people can now score a whole CASTLE. For FREE.

Under Cammini e Percorsi, which translates to ‘paths and routes’, people can apply to receive a historic castle or villa that has fallen into a state of disrepair.

The program aims to increase tourism, restore historic buildings and help stop overcrowding in cities like Venice and Florence.

Successful applicants will be gifted a nine-year lease on the condition the property will be open to the public. There will also be the option to extend the lease period for a further nine years once it expires.

If you’re in the market for something longer-term, however, the most impressive applicants are eligible to receive a 50-year lease.

Applications are open until June 26.
