Baker Boy and Moju Juju win big at National Indigenous Music Awards

Night of nights.

2019 has been one of the biggest years for Indigenous music, with ARIA charting albums, commercial radio breakthroughs, national tours, Hottest 100 placements and acts playing festivals across the country.

On Saturday, Australia’s biggest celebration of First Nations Music took place with the National Indigenous Music Awards in Darwin.

Rapper, dancer, artist and actor, Baker Boy took home the Artist of the Year Award. He has been particularly celebrated for his music that combines lyrics in both English and Yolŋu Matha.

Hip hop and R’n’B artist Mojo Juju took home Song of the Year and Album of the Year for Native Tongue. The powerful album (and track of the same name) tell of the yearning for connection to traditional land and culture, and the anger at its loss.

The night also featured performances from Uncle Archie Roach, Jessica Mauboy, Dan Sultan and more.
