This is the music Sydney singer-songwriter Carla Wehbe couldn’t stop listening to this year

WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE

Packed full of pop.

Despite it being an unbelievably terrible year (or perhaps because of it?), 2020 has been packed with excellent music. So much of it, in fact, that I’m sure there are albums, singles and music videos that have entirely passed you by.

I know there have been for me, and that’s why I’m asking some of Australia’s most innovative and talented artists to tell me about the music they couldn’t stop listening to this year. Because who better to ask than people who literally make music for a living?

Our next artist in the series is Sydney-based pop singer-songwriter Carla Wehbe. Carla’s latest single ‘Love Me For Me’ is about finding beauty in your uniqueness. Speaking on the new single she said, “I never understood why I couldn’t just be accepted for how I was, who I liked or how I liked to dress. Sometimes I like to get dressed up and other times I just want to wear ripped jeans, an oversized t-shirt, converse and a baseball cap. Both are me and that’s ok.”

True to form, Carla is a self-described “huge pop girl” and her top picks of the year are all addictive and instantly memorable, in the way that seriously good pop is. Take in her favourites of the year below.

Dagny – Strangers and Lovers album

It was the perfect combination of beautiful pop melodies, heartbreaking lyrics and I loved the ’80s influence throughout the album.

Astrid S – ‘Leave it Beautiful’

She can do no wrong, I love pretty much everything she puts out.

Merci, Mercy – Tequila & Lemonade

Such a great pop song with such unique, conversational lyrics.

Ryann – Andrew

I’m a huge pop girl and as far as melodies go, they don’t get much better than this song.

King Princess – ‘Only Time Makes It Human’ music video

Such a unique video, King Princess is always pushing boundaries and experimenting and everything she does is inspiring.

Conan Gray – ‘Heather’ song and music video

Melodies = perfect, lyrics = perfect, video concept = so creative and beautiful. He really is cementing his place in the industry.

Troye Sivan – ‘Easy’

Beautifully written and heartbreaking at the same time. This is my favourite Troye Sivan sound and I could listen to this song on repeat.
