Chela drops a new sound and we’re into it

Words by Ruby Staley

A glimmer of hope in the pop industry.

Forever evolving her sound and honing her craft, Chela returns today with her energising, new single ‘Losing Belief’.

Having collaborated with the likes of Banoffee, Paces and Goldroom, and notching a number of successful releases into her artistic belt, this is the first offering from the Australian-Filipino artist with a new LA label.

Unlike a typical pop tune, Chela’s new release is more raw than her previous sound. It’s driven by a dance-y synth beat and communicates the despair that comes from a loss of hope in artistic passion.

Rebelling against the pressure to churn out formulaic singles, Chela’s sound and lyrics challenge what it is to be a pop artist in the Internet-age.

Chela hopes that the track will become “a mantra for those who lose belief in anything and need to be reminded that their own power”.

She has also self-directed and choreographed an accompanying video.

The high-production, low-budget film clip came together in just one day at a Perth beach house and perfectly captures her unique and playful aesthetic.
