FIRST LOOK: Body Type’s ‘Insomnia’ video

In the ’90s when she was fronting Sleater-Kinney, Carrie Brownstein said that, “musicians, especially those who are women, are often dogged by the assumption that they are singing from a personal perspective.” There is no danger for Sydney-band Body Type of falling into such clichés.

The self-described “trash can girl band” are revitalising garage rock and have followed up on their first EP success with a video for their new track ‘Insomnia’.

Band member Sophie McComish found a second-hand film handycam at a junk shop and carted it around with her on the band’s American tour earlier in the year.

The result is some gloriously grainy footage of the group’s first voyage outside Australian waters.

While the track is intimate and the home-video feel creates a sense of nostalgia, they sing of tenderness in an authentic way. It’s a post-Internet nod to a pre-Internet world, and we’re grateful for the vibe.
