Lilac Everything: Emma Louise

WORDS BY BIANCA O’NEILL

Meet Emma Louise’s alter ego.

Recording Lilac Everything in a Seattle studio with producer and songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr. (who’s worked with the likes of Sia, Adele and John Legend) was obviously a transformative experience for Emma Louise.

From the opening strains of ‘Wish You Well’, you mightn’t recognise Emma’s trademark sound because for the entire album, she’s pitched her vocals down to a more masculine tone – one that she’s fondly named ‘Joseph’.

Her alter ego makes for a challenging and unique album when you consider Emma’s previous work. However, if you cast your preconceptions aside (and a bunch of gender commentary about this artistic choice in the #MeToo era), you’ll find it’s actually a pretty conventional and beautiful album of soulful pop songs.
