Pre-loved fashion stole the show at eBay and Second Life Market’s runway

On an overcast Thursday evening, Melbourne’s creative community gathered in a Kensington laneway wearing the city’s unofficial uniform: textural layers in shades of black and white. The occasion? The eBay x Second Life Markets runway, set in the buzzing cultural precinct, Younghusband. The event celebrated pre-loved fashion, true personal style, and the added confidence that comes with eBay Authenticity Guarantee when shopping for luxury secondhand.

Clad in floor-skimming patent leather, sharp tailored suits and tinted sunglasses, attendees watched on as models showcased a curated collection of archival designer and true vintage pieces, all sourced from eBay. A 120-year-old wool store-turned-village-like precinct, Younghusband offered a fitting backdrop for the runway – where garments with their own storied histories were given the chance to begin a new chapter.

For Meg Charnaud, co-founder of Second Life Markets, the eBay collaboration marked the culmination of seven years working in pre-loved fashion. Featuring sought-after labels like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Roberto Cavalli (the designer behind Meg’s own slinky black bustier dress for the evening), the collection gave Meg the opportunity to exercise her styling prowess while showcasing how pre-loved pieces can integrate seamlessly into an existing wardrobe.

“Because fashion can be very exclusive, my main focus for sourcing all these pieces from eBay was ensuring they’re all very wearable,” Meg told Fashion Journal. “I want to encourage people to feel comfortable wearing their cool, fun things every day.”

And encouraged they were. Each guest was given a runway cheat-sheet, where they could match up the grail pieces – a red, ruffled Yves Saint Laurent Mombasa handbag, a teeny-tiny printed Hermès purse – to the corresponding looks on the runway.

If Second Life Markets and eBay bring vintage and archive pieces together in a room, Thursday’s runway truly brought them to life. Each look was imbued with personality and movement, accessorised with headphones, bunches of flowers and even a back-pocket paperback. As we do in our own wardrobes, the looks blended high and low, in a way that felt both dynamic and effortless.

A white baseball tee and thongs were paired with an oversized, under-the-arm lilac Louis Vuitton duffle; low-slung leather pants were styled with an intricately beaded bra; a cutaway swimsuit was worn with yellow peep-toes and a sweep of baby-blue eyeshadow.

After the show, a humming crowd of runway-goers moved into Younghusband’s gallery-like space for the next chapter of the night: an exclusive eBay Live auction of some of the pieces from the show. It was an exciting glimpse of how online shopping, through eBay Live, has been transformed into this interactive process where you can watch and bid in real time. Guests were given the chance to shop a selection of pieces straight from the runway, backed by eBay Authenticity Guarantee, which offers authentication for eligible luxury fashion items including handbags, sneakers and newly introduced; watches.

“What’s exciting about eBay Live is the way it brings shopping and discovery together in real time,” explains Alastair Low, eBay Live Australia’s Country Manager. “Working with Second Life Markets brings a new community into that experience, one that shares our passion for unique finds and giving great pieces another life. With eBay Authenticity Guarantee, buyers can have more confidence in their pre-loved purchases.”

The best part? You can take home a piece of the runway. On October 15 at 7pm AEST, you’ll be able to bid on archival and pre-loved pieces from just $1 on eBay Live. Hosted by fashion creator Petra Mockova and Second Life Markets, tune into eBay Live on the eBay app or visit ebay.com.au/ebaylive.

Scanning the street style around the room – particularly the vintage Fendi Baguettes, Balenciaga City bags and Gucci Jackie bags perched on crooked elbows – it was clear that Thursday night’s crowd knew a thing or two about pre-loved fashion. At a time when micro-trends come and go at dizzying speed, resale offers a sustainable alternative to buying new: one that values history and individuality. And with the eBay Authenticity Guarantee extending to watches alongside handbags, sneakers and accessories, shoppers have even more confidence in the pre-loved items they’re buying.

Gesticulating with a canapé in hand, one guest pointed out a particularly worn patch of leather on her handbag’s top handle. “Whoever had this before me loved carrying it like this,” she said, gripping the handle between her fingertips. “I prefer crossbody. Isn’t that fabulous?”
