The best beginner-friendly sewing classes in Sydney

words by lara daly

Learn to sew, knit and mend.

Is there anything more impressive than asking someone where they got their top, skirt or bag, only to learn they made it themselves? I’ve never been that person. Any basic sewing skills I picked up in Year 10 home ec have long since vanished from my brain.

It’s unfortunate, considering the growing pile of clothes in my room that need mending, hemming or generally rescuing. This year, I’ve made a concerted effort to take pieces to my local tailor for repairs and alterations, rather than sending them to the op shop. But why stop there?

I have an old-but-untouched Bernina machine sitting at home, and I’ve decided it’s finally time to learn how to use it. Beyond simple repairs, I’m inspired by the incredible upcycling projects that seem to be everywhere on TikTok. Surely it can’t be that hard?

If you’re a motivated self-starter, there are countless tutorials and how-to videos on YouTube to get you started. But if, like me, you need a little more guidance (ideally with a teacher on hand to answer the inevitable “why is my machine doing that?” questions), you’re in luck.

From one-off introductory sessions to multi-week courses covering everything from alterations to garment making, we’ve rounded up the best sewing classes in Sydney below.

You might know Tessuti for its beautiful fabrics and patterns, but the Sydney store also offers a range of sewing classes for creatives of all skill levels. Held at its Surry Hills shop, the small-group sessions are capped at five people, so there’s plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get hands-on guidance. Complete beginners can start with the Beginner’s Class, while more experienced sewers can bring along their own project, or choose a specific class like making a sunhat, or learning how to draft a pattern from a favourite garment.
