We’ve rounded up five of the best highlighters and illuminators to help you achieve a perfect winter glow
So it’s official, we are a nation obsessed with highlighters. It’s THE look everyone wants to emulate thanks to Kim Kardashian’s sculpted cheekbones and the trademark Victoria’s Secret translucent dewy glow. It has resulted in a social media phenomenon, everyone is desperate to know “what highlighter is that?”
So let me give you the ‘glow-down’ on the best products to achieve this much desired look.
First of all, I’d like to point out that what you put in to your body is just as important as what you put on to it. Glowing healthy skin, believe it or not, comes from within. Eating right, exercising regularly and drinking plenty of water really does make a difference. Time to skip that late night Maccas visit.
Ok, I can sense you’ve probably skipped the above and just want to know about the products. Here are five of the best:
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Pearl, Opal, Topaz ($66, beccacosmetics.com)
This is a light reflective cream that has garnered quite a following, well known British makeup artist Lisa Eldridge is a fan of all three shades, and for good reason. It can be used under or over your foundation for a polished dewy look and its consistency is beautiful, relatively thick and blendable. As an added bonus it also has an SPF25.
MAC Lustre Drops in Sun Rush ($40, David Jones, Myer)
This is a peachy bronze highlighter with gold pearl reflections suitable for a warmer skin tone or if you want to give yourself that ‘week-in-Bali’ look. I love this mixed in with a foundation as it gives a golden glow to the skin. Alternatively you could dot this on specific areas over foundation and blend out with a soft brush. A little goes a long way with this, so great value for money.
Benefit High Beam ($45, Myer)
As a teenager, this was the product that all my friends and I used to look glowing for the boys at the school disco. It’s a liquid with a cult following and is very easy to use with a built in brush applicator. Pink gold in tone and quite shimmery, but don’t be put off, once blended it gives the perfect amount of highlight.
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder ($62, Mecca Cosmetica)
Now we’ve moved to a powder formula highlighter, ideal for those of you out there with an oily skin type, powder highlighters are best used after you’ve set your foundation. The Ambient Lighting Powder from Hourglass is a light diffuser and comes in six shades for different effects and skin tones. We trialled Dim Light which is a neutral peach beige and satin smooth on the skin. It gives a really elegant warm radiance, à la Blake Lively.
Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Beige, Bronze ($72, Bobbi Brown)
Another powder highlighter that comes in several shades, but Beige and Bronze are the most adept at highlighting depending on your skin tone. The famous five high shimmer strips are handmade in Italy and intended to be used all together for a lit-from-within glow, or individually as eyeshadows. Try using a damp brush with the shimmer brick for a really opaque finish.
