Holy grails: The best lip balms according to the FJ team

WORDS BY FASHION JOURNAL

One can never have too many.

Lip products have always been a staple in the makeup industry, having the ability to tie together any look. Whether you dabbled in the liquid matte lipsticks of 2016 or the milky glosses of the 2000s, there is sure to be a product for you out there.

Dry and cracked lips are almost inevitable during the colder months – a universal and unpleasant experience. Anyone could argue that winter is their favourite season, but my lips, for one, would disagree.

At the end of the day, the best lip products are the ones that leave your lips feeling nourished. Whether it’s a tinted balm, overnight mask or simple stick, everyone in the FJ office has their tried-and-tested favourites. Find our holy grails below.

Vaseline Lip Balm Original Stick

Picked by: Daisy Henry, Fashion Journal’s Assistant Editor

My beauty cabinet is a real mix of high/low – and case in point. Vaseline’s lip balm is around four dollars from Chemist Warehouse and is, without fail, my most-used lip product. I would quite literally lose my mind without it. My lips can be fairly sensitive, but this is gentle, hydrating and adds a natural sheen.

Tocobo Vita Glaze Lip Mask

Picked by: Lara Daly, Fashion Journal’s Senior Editor

Every time I enter a Korean beauty store, I always walk out with sheet masks and a new lip balm. I bought this Tocobo one purely because I liked the glass packaging but it’s become my favourite overnight lip treatment. It’s a super thick, glossy jelly texture that really seals in moisture. A great dupe for the Tatcha Kissu mask, if you can’t bring yourself to spend $48 on a lip balm.

As someone with perpetually dry lips, I’ve tried so many lip balms. When my lips need some extra TLC, I always reach for the Ole Henriksen lip treatment, specifically in the Cocoa Creme shade. It provides both moisture and a subtle tint. This is one of the best lip balms for longevity – the staying power is one of the best on the market.

Loved the Malin and Goetz Lip Moisturiser for the packaging, stayed for the formula. It’s simple and reliable. I think everyone needs that one lip balm you can always go back to, and this is mine. It’s become a small everyday essential that I never leave home without.

More of a balm than a lipstick, Clinique Black Honey is something I reach for when I want just a little flush of colour that can match anything. Whether I want to place a little in the centre of the lips with a lip liner or use it on its own, it’s the perfect versatile product to have on the go. There’s a reason why this lip balm has been around for so long – it really isa cult classic!

I discovered the French cult-fave Nuxe honey lip balm when I had hours to kill in a Mexico City airport. It smells like orange blossom and is as thick as the goop in an almond croissant – an almost gritty paste that melts into your lips when you rub it in. Now that you can buy it at Chemist Warehouse, it’s a mainstay on my desk at work.

Mario Badescu Vanilla Lip Wax

Picked by: Daisy Henry, Fashion Journal’s Assistant Editor

As part of an effort to tidy up my desk, I did a small Mario Badescu haul at Mecca. I bought the Facial Spray With Aloe, Cucumber And Green Tea (a godsend) and decided to try its Vanilla Lip Wax. It’s 10 dollars and made with beeswax, jojoba oil, and vitamin E.

I’d wanted to try Glossier for years, so when it finally launched in Australia, I immediately placed an order. Balm Dotcom ended up being the standout. I always reach for the Birthday Cake shade. It’s technically more of a clear gloss with a subtle shimmer, but it gives my lips a cool-toned finish that I love. I wear it on its own or over lip liner, so it’s one of those products that’s always in my bag.
